(2 Chronicles 9:1–12)

Then, too, the queen of Sheba, having heard of the fame of Solomon in the name of the Lord, arrived to test him with enigmas.

And entering into Jerusalem with a great retinue, and with riches, and with camels carrying aromatics, and with an exceedingly great quantity of gold and precious stones, she went to king Solomon. And she spoke to him all that she held in her heart.

And Solomon taught her, in all the words that she had proposed to him. There was not any word which was able to be hidden from the king, or which he did not answer for her.

Then, when the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built,

and the food of his table, and the dwelling places of his servants, and the rows of his ministers, and their apparel, and the cupbearers, and the holocausts that he was offering in the house of the Lord, she had no longer any spirit in her.

And she said to the king: “The word is true, which I have heard in my own land,

about your words and your wisdom. But I did not believe those who explained it to me, until I went myself and saw it with my own eyes. And I have discovered that the half of it has not been told to me: your wisdom and works are greater than the report that I have heard.

Blessed are your men, and blessed are your servants, who stand before you always, and who hear your wisdom.

Blessed is the Lord your God, whom you have greatly pleased, and who has placed you upon the throne of Israel. For the Lord loves Israel forever, and he has appointed you as king, so that you may accomplish judgment and justice.”

Then she gave the king one hundred twenty talents of gold, and an exceedingly great amount of aromatics and precious stones. No greater quantity of aromatics was ever again brought forth as these, which the queen of Sheba gave to king Solomon.

Then, too, the navy of Hiram, which carried gold from Ophir, brought an exceedingly great quantity of thyine wood and precious stones from Ophir.

And the king made, from the thyine wood, the posts of the house of the Lord, and of the house of the king, and citharas and lyres for the musicians. No thyine trees of this kind were ever again brought forth or seen, even to the present day.

Then king Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all that she desired and requested of him, aside from what he himself had offered to her from his royal bounty. And she returned and went away to her own land, with her servants.

Solomon’s Wealth and Splendor

(2 Chronicles 1:14–17; 2 Chronicles 9:13–28)

Now the weight of the gold that was brought to Solomon each year was six hundred sixty-six talents of gold,

aside from what was brought to him by the men who were over the tributes, and by the merchants, and by those selling every kind of small item, and by all the kings of Arabia, and by the rulers of the land.

Also, king Solomon made two hundred large shields from the purest gold. He dispensed six hundred shekels of gold for the layers of one shield.

And for the three hundred crescent-shaped shields of tested gold, there were three hundred minas of gold covering one shield. And the king placed these in the house of the forest of Lebanon.

Also, king Solomon made a great throne from ivory. And he clothed it with a great quantity of red gold.

The throne had six steps, and the summit of the throne was rounded in the back section. And there were two hands, on one side and the other, holding the seat. And two lions were standing beside each hand,

with twelve little lions standing upon the six steps, on one side and the other. No similar work has been made, ever in any kingdom.

Moreover, all the vessels from which king Solomon would drink were of gold. And all the items in the house of the forest of Lebanon were of the purest gold. There was no silver, nor was any accounting made of silver in the days of Solomon.

For the navy of the king, once every three years, went with the navy of Hiram by sea to Tarshish, bringing from there gold, and silver, and elephant tusks, and primates, and peacocks.

And so, king Solomon was magnified above all the kings of the earth in riches and in wisdom.

And all the earth desired to see the face of Solomon, so as to hear his wisdom, which God had granted to his heart.

And each one brought him gifts, vessels of silver and of gold, clothing and weapons of war, as well as aromatics, and horses, and mules, throughout each year.

And Solomon gathered together the chariots and horsemen. And he had one thousand four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. And he placed them in the walled cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.

And he caused silver to be as abundant in Jerusalem as stones, and he supplied a multitude of cedars like the sycamores that grow in the plains.

And horses were brought for Solomon from Egypt and from Kue. For the merchants of the king were buying these from Kue. And they paid out the established price.

Now a four-horse chariot would be sent from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for one hundred and fifty. And in this manner, all the kings of the Hittites and of Syria were selling horses.

Aber auch die Königin von Saba hörte den Ruf von Salomon über den Namen des Herrn und kam, ihn mit Rätselfragen auf die Probe zu stellen.

Und sie zog in Jerusalem ein mit großem Gefolge und Reichtum, mit Kamelen, welche Gewürze und eine unermessliche Menge Goldes und kostbare Edelsteine trugen, und kam zu dem Könige Salomon und redete zu ihm alles, was sie in ihrem Herzen hatte.

Und Salomon belehrte sie über alle Fragen, die sie vorlegte; es war nichts, was dem Könige verborgen sein konnte, worauf er ihr nicht geantwortet hätte.

Als nun die Königin von Saba alle Weisheit Salomons sah und das Haus, das er gebaut hatte,

die Speisen seines Tisches, die Wohnungen seiner Beamten, die Ordnungen der Dienerschaft und ihre Kleider, die Mundschenken und die Brandopfer, welche er im Hause des Herrn darbrachte, geriet sie außer sich

und sprach zu dem Könige: Wahr ist das Gerücht, das ich in meinem Lande gehört habe

von deinen Aussprüchen und von deiner Weisheit; aber ich glaubte denen nicht, welche mir davon erzählten, bis ich selbst kam und mit eigenen Augen sah und mich überzeugte, dass mir nicht die Hälfte berichtet worden ist. Deine Weisheit und deine Werke sind größer als der Ruf, den ich vernommen habe.

Glückselig sind deine Leute und glückselig deine Diener, die immerdar vor dir stehen und deine Weisheit hören!

Gepriesen sei der Herr, dein Gott dem du wohlgefallen hast und der dich auf den Thron Israels gesetzt hat; weil der Herr Israel immerdar liebt und dich zum Könige eingesetzt hat, dass du Recht und Gerechtigkeit übest.

Sie gab also dem Könige hundertundzwanzig Talente Goldes und überaus viele Gewürze und kostbare Edelsteine; nie wieder sind so viele Gewürze gebracht worden, wie die waren, welche die Königin von Saba dem Könige Salomon gab.

(Aber auch die Flotte Hirams, welche das Gold und Ophir holte, brachte von Ophir überaus viel wohlriechendes Holz und kostbare Edelsteine mit.

Und der König ließ von dem wohlriechenden Holze Geländer für das Haus des Herrn und für das königliche Haus und Zithern und Harfen für die Sänger machen; solches wohlriechende Holz ist nicht mehr gebracht noch gesehen worden bis auf den heutigen Tag.)

Der König Salomon dagegen gab der Königin von Saba alles, was sie wünschte und von ihm begehrte, neben dem, was er ihr aus eigenem Antriebe als Königsgabe dargebracht hatte. Und sie kehrte um und zog mit ihren Dienern in ihr Land.

Salomos großer Reichtum

(2. Chronik 1,14-17; 2. Chronik 9,13-28)

Das Gewicht des Goldes aber, das man Salomon Jahr für Jahr brachte, betrug sechshundertsechsundvierzig Goldtalente

außer dem, was die Männer brachten, welche über die Abgaben gesetzt waren, und die Kaufleute und alle Händler und alle Könige Arabiens und die Statthalter des Landes.

Auch ließ der König Salomon zweihundert Schilde von ganz lauterem Golde machen und gab sechshundert Sekel Goldes zu der Platte jedes Schildes.

Sodann ließ er dreihundert kleinere Schilde aus erprobtem Golde machen; mit dreihundert Minen Goldes wurde jeder Schild überzogen und der König hinterlegte sie in dem Waldhause vom Libanon.

Weiter ließ der König Salomon einen großen Thron von Elfenbein machen und überzog ihn mit hell glänzendem Golde.

Derselbe hatte sechs Stufen und war oben gerundet an der Hinterseite, den Sitzplatz hielten zwei Armlehnen an beiden Seiten und zwei Löwen standen neben den Armlehnen.

Zwölf kleine Löwen standen auf den sechs Stufen zu beiden Seiten; ein solches Werk ist in keinem Königreich je gemacht worden.

Aber auch alle Gefäße, aus denen der König Salomon trank, waren von Gold und alles Geräte des Waldhauses vom Libanon war von reinstem Golde; nichts war von Silber, denn dies ward in den Tagen Salomons für nichts geachtet,

weil die Flotte des Königs mit der Flotte Hirams einmal in drei Jahren über das Meer nach Tharsis fuhr und von da Gold, Silber, Elefantenzähne, Affen und Pfauen brachte.

So ward der König Salomon erhöht über alle Könige der Erde an Reichtum und an Weisheit.

Und die ganze Erde begehrte Salomons Angesicht zu schauen und seine Weisheit zu hören, welche Gott ihn ins Herz gegeben hatte.

Ein jeder brachte ihm Geschenke, silberne und goldene Geräte, Kleider und Kriegswaffen, auch Gewürze, Rosse und Maultiere, Jahr für Jahr.

Und Salomon sammelte Wagen und Reiter und erhielt tausendvierhundert Wagen und zwölftausend Reiter; diese legte er in die festen Städte und zu dem Könige nach Jerusalem.

Und er machte, dass zu Jerusalem ein gleicher Überfluss an Silber war wie an Steinen und Zedernholz schaffte er soviel herbei, als wilde Feigenbäume in den Ebenen wachsen.

Auch führte man Pferde für Salomon aus Ägypten und aus Koa aus; denn die Kaufleute des Königs kauften sie in Koa und brachten sie um einen bestimmten Preis herbei.

Ein Viergespann aus Ägypten kam auf sechshundert Sekel Silbers und ein Pferd auf hundertfünfzig. Auf diese Weise verkauften alle Könige der Hethiter und Syriens ihre Pferde.
