- Kapitel 1 -

(Psalm 113:1–9)

There was a certain man from Ramah of Zophim, on Mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite.(a)

And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the second was Peninnah. And Peninnah had sons. But Hannah did not have children.

And this man went up from his city, on the established days, so that he might adore and sacrifice to the Lord of hosts at Shiloh. Now the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests of the Lord, were in that place.

Then the day arrived, and Elkanah immolated. And he gave portions to his wife Peninnah, and to all her sons and daughters.

But to Hannah he gave one portion with sorrow. For he loved Hannah, but the Lord had closed her womb.

And her rival afflicted her and vehemently distressed her, to a great extent, for she rebuked her that the Lord had closed her womb.

And she did so every year, when the time returned for them to ascend to the temple of the Lord. And she provoked her in this way. And so, she wept and did not take food.

Therefore, her husband Elkanah said to her: “Hannah, why are you weeping? And why do you not eat? And for what reason do you afflict your heart? Am I not better to you than ten sons?”

Hannah Prays for a Son

And so, after she ate and drank at Shiloh, Hannah rose up. And Eli, the priest, was sitting on the seat before the door of the temple of the Lord.

And since Hannah was bitter in soul, she prayed to the Lord, weeping greatly.

And she made a vow, saying, “O Lord of hosts, if, in looking with favor, you will see the affliction of your servant and will remember me, and will not forget your handmaid, and if you will give to your servant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall pass over his head.”

Then it happened that, while she multiplied prayers before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth.

For Hannah was speaking in her heart, and only her lips moved, and her voice was barely heard. Therefore, Eli considered her to be drunk,

and so he said to her: “How long will you be inebriated? You should take only a little wine, but instead you are drenched.”

Responding, Hannah said: “By no means, my lord. For I am an exceedingly unhappy woman, and I drank neither wine, nor anything that can inebriate. Instead, I have poured out my soul in the sight of the Lord.

You should not repute your handmaid as one of the daughters of Belial. For I have been speaking from the abundance of my sorrow and grief, even until now.”

Then Eli said to her: “Go in peace. And may the God of Israel grant to you your petition, which you have begged of him.”

And she said, “I wish that your handmaid may find grace in your eyes.” And the woman went on her way, and she ate, and her countenance was no longer changed for the worse.

The Birth of Samuel

And they rose up in the morning, and they worshipped before the Lord. And they returned and arrived at their own house at Ramah. Then Elkanah knew his wife Hannah. And the Lord remembered her.

And it happened that, in the course of days, Hannah conceived and bore a son. And she called his name Samuel, because she had requested him from the Lord.(c)

Now her husband Elkanah ascended with his entire house, so that he might immolate to the Lord a solemn sacrifice, with his vow.

But Hannah did not go up. For she said to her husband, “I will not go, until the infant has been weaned, and until I may lead him, so that he may appear before the sight of the Lord, and may remain always there.”

And her husband Elkanah said to her: “Do what seems good to you, and stay until you wean him. And I pray that the Lord may fulfill his word.” Therefore, the woman remained at home, and she breastfed her son, until she withdrew him from milk.

And after she had weaned him, she brought him with her, along with three calves, and three measures of flour, and a small bottle of wine, and she led him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. But the boy was still a young child.

And they immolated a calf, and they presented the boy to Eli.

And Hannah said: “I beg you, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord: I am that woman, who stood before you here, praying to the Lord.

I prayed for this child, and the Lord granted to me my petition, which I asked of him.

Because of this, I have also lent him to the Lord, for all the days when he shall be lent to the Lord.” And they adored the Lord in that place. And Hannah prayed, and she said:

Die Familie von Elkanah

(Psalm 113,1-9)

Es war ein Mann von Ramathaimsophim, im Gebirge Ephraim, namens Elkana, der Sohn Jerohams, des Sohnes Elius, des Sohnes Thohus, des Sohnes Suphs, ein Ephrathiter.

Dieser hatte zwei Frauen, die eine hieß Anna, die andere Phenenna. Phenenna hatte Söhne; Anna aber hatte keine Kinder.

Dieser Mann zog von seiner Stadt an den bestimmten Tagen hinauf, um den Herrn der Heerscharen in Silo anzubeten und ihm Opfer darzubringen. Es waren aber daselbst die zwei Söhne Helis, Ophni und Phinees, Priester des Herrn.

Es kam also, dass Elkana opferte, und er gab seinem Weibe Phenenna und allen seinen Söhnen und Töchtern Anteile;

Anna aber gab er traurig einen einzigen Anteil, weil er Anna liebte. Der Herr hatte nämlich ihren Mutterschoß verschlossen.

Zudem kränkte und betrübte sie ihre Nebenbuhlerin dergestalt, dass sie ihr vorwarf, dass der Herr ihren Mutterschoß verschlossen hatte.

So tat sie alle Jahre, wenn sie nach Wiederkehr der Zeit zum Tempel des Herrn hinaufzogen, und reizte sie so. Jene aber weinte und nahm keine Speise.

Hannahs Gelübde

Da sprach Elkana, ihr Mann, zu ihr: Anna, warum weinst du? Und warum issest du nicht? Und warum ist dein Herz betrübt? Gelte ich dir nicht mehr als zehn Söhne?

Aber Anna stand auf, nachdem sie in Silo gegessen und getrunken hatte. Während nun Heli, der Priester, auf dem Stuhle vor der Tür des Tempels des Herrn saß,

betete Anna mit betrübtem Herzen zu dem Herrn und weinte sehr

und machte ein Gelübde und sprach: Herr der Heerscharen! Wenn du auf das Leid deiner Magd schauest und meiner gedenkst und deiner Magd nicht vergissest und deiner Magd einen männlichen Nachkommen gibst, so will ich ihn dem Herrn übergeben für alle Tage seines Lebens, und kein Schermesser soll über seinem Haupte kommen.

Da sie nun lange vor dem Herrn betete, geschah es, dass Heli ihren Mund beobachtete.

Anna aber redete in ihrem Herzen, nur ihre Lippen bewegten sich, und ihre Stimme ward durchaus nicht gehört. Darum meinte Heli, sie sei trunken,

und sprach zu ihr: Wie lange willst du trunken sein? Verdaue den Wein ein wenig, von dem du voll bist.

Da antwortete Anna und sprach: Nicht doch, mein Herr! ich bin vielmehr eine überaus unglückliche Frau und habe keinen Wein noch etwas, was berauschen kann, getrunken, sondern ich habe mein Herz vor dem Herrn ausgeschüttet!

Erachte deine Magd nicht als eine von den Töchtern Belials; den aus der Fülle meines Schmerzes und Kummers habe ich bis jetzt geredet.

Darauf sprach Heli zu ihr: Geh hin im Frieden, und der Gott Israels gewähre dir deine Bitte, welche du an ihn gerichtet hast!

Sie sprach: O möchte deine Magd in deinen Augen Gnade finden! So ging die Frau ihres Weges und aß und ihr Angesicht war nicht mehr niedergeschlagen.

Samuel wird geboren und geweiht

Am Morgen machten sie sich auf, beteten vor dem Herrn an und kehrten dann heim und kamen in ihr Haus nach Ramatha. Elkana aber erkannte sein Weib Anna, und der Herr gedachte ihrer.

Und es geschah nach Umlauf der Tage, dass Anna empfing und einen Sohn gebar; und sie nannte seinen Namen Samuel, weil sie ihn vom Herrn erbeten hatte.

Da zog Elkana, ihr Mann und sein ganzes Haus hinauf, um dem Herrn das feierliche Opfer und sein Gelübde darzubringen.

Anna aber ging nicht hinauf; denn sie sprach zu ihrem Manne: Ich werde nicht hingehen, bis der Knabe entwöhnt ist; dann will ich ihn hinführen, dass er vor dem Angesichte des Herrn erscheine und daselbst auf immer bleibe.

Elkana, ihr Mann, sprach zu ihr: Tue, was dir gut scheint, und bleibe zurück, bis du ihn entwöhnt hast; und ich bete, dass der Herr sein Wort erfüllen wolle. So blieb die Frau zurück und säugte ihren Sohn, bis sie ihn von der Milch entwöhnte.

Und nachdem sie ihn entwöhnt, nahm sie ihn mit sich hinauf, mit drei jungen Rindern und drei Maß Mehl und einem Kruge Wein, und brachte ihn in das Haus des Herrn nach Silo. Der Knabe aber war noch ein kleines Kind;

und sie opferten ein junges Rind und brachten den Knaben zu Heli.

Und Anna sprach: Ich bitte, mein Gebieter, so wahr du lebst, Herr! ich bin das Weib welches vor dir stand und zu dem Herrn hier betete.

Um diesen Knaben hier habe ich gebeten, und der Herr hat mir meine Bitte gewährt, die ich an ihn gerichtet habe.

Darum weihe ich ihn auch dem Herrn für alle Tage, die er dem Herrn geweiht sein wird. Und sie beteten daselbst den Herrn an. Und Anna betete und sprach:
