- Kapitel 15 -

Now Azariah, the son of Oded, had the Spirit of God within him.

And he went out to meet Asa, and he said to him: “Listen to me, Asa and all of Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you, because you have been with him. If you seek him, you will find him. But if you abandon him, he will abandon you.

Then many days will pass in Israel, apart from the true God, and apart from a learned priest, and apart from the law.

And when, in their anguish, they will have returned to the Lord, the God of Israel, and will have sought him, they shall find him.

In that time, there will be no peace for those who depart and those who enter. Instead, there will be terror on every side, among all the inhabitants of the lands.

For nation will fight against nation, and city against city. For the Lord will disturb them with every anguish.

But as for you, be strengthened, and do not let your hands be weakened. For there will be a reward for your work.”

Asa’s Reforms

(1 Kings 15:9–15)

And when Asa had heard these particular words, and the prophecy of the prophet Azariah, the son of Oded, he was strengthened, and he took away the idols from the entire land of Judah, and from Benjamin, and from the cities that he had seized of mount Ephraim, and he dedicated the altar of the Lord, which was before the portico of the Lord.

And he gathered together all of Judah and Benjamin, and with them the new arrivals from Ephraim and Manasseh and Simeon. For many had fled to him from Israel, seeing that the Lord his God was with him.

And when they had arrived in Jerusalem, in the third month, in the fifteenth year of the reign of Asa,

they immolated to the Lord on that day, from the best of the spoils and from the plunder that they had brought: seven hundred oxen and seven thousand rams.

And he entered, according to custom, in order to confirm the covenant, so that they would seek the Lord, the God of their fathers, with their whole heart and with their whole soul.

“But if anyone,” he said, “will not seek the Lord, the God of Israel, let him die, from the least even to the greatest, from man even to woman.”

And they swore to the Lord, with a great voice, in jubilation, and with the blare of trumpets, and with the sound of horns,

all who were in Judah swore with a curse. For with all their heart they swore, and with all their will they sought and found him. And the Lord granted rest on all sides to them.

Then too, Maacah, the mother of king Asa, he deposed from the august authority, because she had made an idol of Priapus within a sacred grove. And he entirely crushed it, breaking it into pieces, and he burned it at the torrent Kidron.

But some high places were left in Israel. Even so, the heart of Asa was perfect during all his days.

And whatever his father or he himself had vowed, he brought into the house of the Lord: silver and gold, and vessels for various uses.

Truly, there was no war, until the thirty-fifth year of the kingdom of Asa.

Die Reformen von Asa

Auf Azarias aber, den Sohn Odeds, kam der Geist Gottes

und er trat Asa entgegen und sprach zu ihm: Höret mich, Asa, und ihr, ganz Juda und Benjamin! Der Herr war mit euch, weil ihr mit ihm waret. Wenn ihr ihn sucht, so werdet ihr ihn finden, wenn ihr ihn aber verlasset, so wird er euch verlassen.

Viele Tage aber werden in Israel vergehen ohne den wahren Gott und ohne lehrende Priester und ohne das Gesetz.

Und wenn sie in ihrer Bedrängnis sich wieder zu dem Herrn, dem Gott Israels, wenden und ihn suchen, werden sie ihn finden.

In jener Zeit wird der, der aus- und einzieht, keinen Frieden haben, sondern Schrecknisse werden überall über alle Bewohner der Länder kommen;

denn ein Volk wird gegen das andere kämpfen und eine Stadt gegen die andere, weil der Herr sie mit aller Art von Bedrängnis verwirren wird.

Ihr aber seid stark und lasset eure Hände nicht schlaff werden, denn euer Tun wird seinen Lohn finden.

Als Asa diese Worte und die Weissagung Azarias, des Sohnes Odeds, des Propheten, hörte, fasste er Mut und schaffte die Götzen aus dem ganzen Lande Juda und aus Benjamin und aus den Städten weg, welche er vom Gebirge Ephraim eingenommen hatte, und weihte den Altar des Herrn, welcher vor der Halle des Herrn stand.

Sodann versammelte er ganz Juda und Benjamin und mit ihnen die Angesessenen aus Ephraim und aus Manasse und aus Simeon; denn es waren zu ihm viele aus Israel geflohen, da sie sahen, dass der Herr, sein Gott, mit ihm war.

Diese kamen im dritten Monat, im fünfzehnten Jahre der Herrschaft Asas, nach Jerusalem

und opferten dem Herrn an diesem Tage von der Beute und dem Kriegsgewinne, den sie mitgebracht, siebenhundert Rinder und siebentausend Widder.

Und er ging hinein, nach Gewohnheit den Bund zu befestigen, dass sie den Herrn, den Gott ihrer Väter, aus ganzem Herzen und aus ganzer Seele suchen sollten.

Wer aber, sprach er, den Herrn, den Gott Israels, nicht sucht, der soll sterben, klein oder groß, Mann oder Weib!

Und es schworen dem Herrn mit lautem Jubelgeschrei, mit Trompetenschall und Posaunenklang

alle, die in Juda waren, und sprachen Beteuerungen aus; denn aus ganzem Herzen schworen sie und mit ganzem Willen suchten sie ihn und fanden ihn; und der Herr gab ihnen Ruhe ringsumher.

Auch setzte er Maacha, die Mutter des Königs Asa, von ihrer großen Herrschaft ab, weil sie im Haine ein Bild des Priapus gemacht hatte, und er zerschlug und zertrümmerte es und verbrannte es am Bache Cedron.

Die Höhen aber wurden in Israel nicht abgetan; doch war das Herz Asas ungeteilt, so lange er lebte.

Und was sein Vater und er selbst gelobt, das brachte er in das Haus des Herrn, Silber und Gold und allerlei Gerätschaften.

Und es war kein Krieg bis zum fünfunddreißigsten Jahre der Herrschaft Asas.
