- Kapitel 23 -

A prayer for grace to flee sin: cautions against profane swearing and other vices.

Lord, Father and Ruler of my life: may you not abandon me to their counsel, nor permit me to fall by them.(a)

They would impose scourges over my thoughts and over the discipline of wisdom in my heart. And they would not spare me from their ignorances, nor would they allow their own offenses to become apparent.(b)

And they intend that my ignorances would increase, and my offenses be multiplied, and my sins abound. And so I would fall in the sight of my adversaries, and be rejoiced over by my enemy.

Lord, Father and God of my life: may you not abandon me to their plans.

Do not leave me with the haughtiness of my eyes. And avert all desire from me.

Take the desire of the body from me, and do not allow sexual desire to take hold of me, and do not permit an irreverent and senseless mind within me.

O sons: listen to the doctrine of my mouth. For those who observe it will not perish by the lips, nor be scandalized into wicked works.

A sinner is held by his own emptiness. And the arrogant and those who speak evil will be scandalized by these things.

Do not allow your mouth to become accustomed to swearing oaths. For in this, there are many pitfalls.

Truly, do not allow the naming of God to be continually in your mouth, and do not treat as if common the names of the holy ones. For you will not escape punishment by them.

Just as a servant, continually interrogated, will not be without a bruise, so everyone who swears oaths and takes God’s name will not be entirely free from sin.

A man who swears many oaths will be filled with iniquity, and scourges will not depart from his house.

And if he fails to fulfill it, his offense will be over him, and if he pretends he fulfilled it, he offends doubly.

And if he swears an oath insincerely, he will not be justified. For his house will be filled with retribution for him.

There is yet another kind of talk which faces death; let it not be found in the inheritance of Jacob.

For all these things will be taken away from the merciful, and they shall not wallow in offenses.

Do not allow your mouth to become accustomed to undisciplined speech. For in this, there is the sin of words.

When you sit in the midst of great men, remember your father and mother.

Otherwise, God may forget you, when you are in their sight, and then you would be repeatedly ridiculed and would suffer disgrace, and you might wish that you had never been born, and you might curse the day of your nativity.

The man who is accustomed to disgraceful words will not accept instruction, all the days of his life.

Two kinds of persons abound in sins, and a third adds wrath and perdition.

A desirous soul is like a burning fire, it will not be quenched, until it devours something.

And a man who is wicked in the desires of his flesh will not desist until he has kindled a fire.

To a man of fornication, all bread is sweet; he will not tire of transgression, to the very end.

Every man who transgresses his own bed has contempt for his own soul. And so he says: “Who can see me?

Darkness surrounds me, and the walls enclose me, and no one catches sight of me. Whom should I fear? The Most High will not remember my offenses.”

And he does not understand that God’s eye sees all things. For fear within a man such as this drives away from him both the fear of God and the eyes of those men who fear God.

And he does not acknowledge that the eyes of the Lord are much brighter than the sun, keeping watch over all the ways of men, even to the depths of the abyss, and gazing into the hearts of men, even to the most hidden parts.

For all things, before they were created, were known to the Lord God. And even after their completion, he beholds all things.

This man will be punished in the streets of the city, and he will be chased like a young horse. And in a place that he does not suspect, he will be captured.

And because he did not understand the fear of the Lord, he will be in disgrace before all men,

as will be every woman, too, who abandons her husband and establishes an inheritance by marriage to another man.

For first, she was unbelieving of the law of the Most High. Second, she offended against her husband. Third, she fornicated by adultery, and so established her children by another man.

This woman will be led into the assembly, and she will be stared at by her children.

Her children will not take root, and her branches will not produce fruit.

She will leave behind her memory as a curse, and her infamy will not be wiped away.

And those who are left behind will acknowledge that there is nothing better than the fear of God, and that there is nothing sweeter than to have respect for the commandments of the Lord.

It is a great glory to follow the Lord. For length of days will be received from him.

Ein Gebet um Gnade, die Sünde zu fliehen: Ermahnungen gegen gottloses Fluchen und andere Laster

Herr, Vater und Gebieter meines Lebens! Überlass mich nicht ihren Anschlägen und lass mich nicht durch sie zu Falle kommen!

O dass doch Geißeln über meine Gedanken geschwungen würden und vor meinem Herzen die Lehre der Weisheit stände, auf dass meiner bei ihrer Unwissenheit nicht geschont werde und ihre Sünden nicht offenbar werden;

dass meine Verirrungen sich nicht mehren und meine Sünden sich nicht häufen und meine Missetaten nicht überhandnehmen und ich so zu alle komme vor meinen Widersachern und mein Feind sich über mich freue!

O Herr, Vater und Gott meines Lebens! Überlass mich nicht ihren Anschlägen!

Lass mich nicht meine Augen stolz erheben und wende alle bösen Gelüste von mir ab!

Nimm des Bauches Gier von mir, lass mich nicht von fleischlichen Lüsten ergriffen werden, gib mich nicht einem schamlosen und unbändigen Sinne preis!

Vernehmet, Kinder! Die Zucht des Mundes; wer sie bewahrt, wird nicht durch seine Lippen zugrunde gehen und durch böse Werke nicht verführt werden.

In seiner eigenen Eitelkeit wird der Sünder gefangen und der Stolze und Lästerer straucheln durch sie.

Gewöhne deinen Mund nicht an das Schwören, denn vielfach ist der Sturz durch dasselbe.

Den Namen Gottes führe nicht stets in deinem Munde und missbrauche die Namen der Heiligen nicht, denn sonst wirst du nicht frei von Schuld bleiben.

Wie nämlich ein Knecht, der beständig gezüchtigt wird, nie der Striemen ledig wird, so kann keiner, der schwört und Gott nennt, rein sein von Sünden.

Ein Mann, der viel schwört, häuft Unrecht auf Unrecht und die Strafe wird nicht von seinem Hause weichen.

Erfüllt er seinen Schwur nicht, so liegt die Versündigung auf ihm; und achtet er dies nicht, so sündigt er doppelt.

Schwört er aber falsch, so wird er nicht gerechtfertigt; denn sein Haus wird mit Heimsuchungen zur Vergeltung belastet werden.

Es gibt noch eine andere Rede, neben welcher der Tod steht; möge sie im Erbteile Jakobs nicht erfunden werden.

Denn fern bleibt dies alles von Frommen und sie lassen sich nicht in Sünden verwickeln.

Gewöhne deinen Mund nicht an ungebührliche Reden, denn in solchen liegt der Ausdruck der Sünde.

Gedenke deines Vaters und deiner Mutter, wenn du inmitten von Vornehmen stehst,

damit Gott deiner nicht vor ihnen vergesse und du dich daran gewöhnest, so ein Tor werdest und Schmach leidest und lieber nicht geboren sein möchtest und den Tag deiner Geburt verfluchest.

Ein Mensch, der sich an Schimpfreden gewöhnt, bleibt sein Leben lang ohne Zucht.

Zwei Arten von Menschen begehen häufig Sünden und die dritte zieht sich Zorn und Verderben zu:

Eine Seele, die wie brennendes Feuer ist, kommt nicht eher zur Ruhe, als bis sie etwas verschlungen hat.

Ein Unzüchtiger lässt nicht von den Gelüsten seines Fleisches ab, bis er das Feuer entfacht hat.

Einem hurerischen Menschen schmeckt jede Speise süß, er wird des Sündigens nicht müde bis ans Ende.

Ein Mensch, der von seinem Ehebette weicht und seine Seele nicht achtet und spricht: Wer sieht mich?

Finsternis ist um mich her, die Wände verbergen mich, und niemand sieht mich. Wen sollte ich scheuen? Der Höchste wird meiner Sünden nicht achten.

Er bedenkt nicht, dass das Auge Gottes alles sieht, dass eine solche Menschenfurcht und die Rücksicht der Menschen, welche ihn fürchten, ihm die Furcht vor Gott raubt.

Er weiß nicht, dass die Augen Gottes viel heller sind als die Sonne, dass sie auf alle Wege der Menschen schauen und die tiefsten Abgründe und die verborgensten Winkel im Herzen der Menschen durchdringen.

Denn Gott dem Herrn war alles bekannt, ehe er es schuf; und so schaut er alles, nachdem es vollbracht ist.

Ein solcher wird auf den Straßen der Stadt gestraft und wie ein Füllen verjagt und, wo er es nicht vermutet, ergriffen werden.

Er wird vor allen zuschanden, weil er die Furcht des Herrn nicht kannte.

Solches widerfährt auch jeder Frau, die ihren Mann verlässt und aus fremder Beiwohnung Erben zur Welt bringt;

denn einmal war sie gegen das Gesetz des Allerhöchsten ungehorsam, sodann hat sie sich gegen ihren Mann versündigt, drittens hat sie sich durch Ehebruch befleckt und von einem anderen Manne Kinder zur Welt gebracht.

Eine solche wird vor die Versammlung der Gemeinde geführt und über ihre Kinder wird Untersuchung angestellt werden.

Ihre Kinder werden nicht Wurzel schlagen und ihre Zweige nicht Früchte tragen;

sie wird ein Andenken hinterlassen, dem man flucht, und ihre Schmach wird nie ausgetilgt werden.

So werden die Zurückgebliebenen dann erkennen, dass nichts besser ist als Gottesfurcht und nichts süßer als die Gebote des Herrn zu betrachten.

Großer Ruhm ist es, dem Herrn zu folgen; denn dadurch wird die Fülle der Tage erlangt.
