The Book of Tobit (Tobias)

- Kapitel 10 -

The parents lament the long absence of their son Tobias. He sets out to return.

In truth, when Tobias was delayed because of the marriage celebration, his father Tobit was worried, saying: “Why do you think my son is delayed, or why has he been detained there?

Do you think that Gabael has died, and that no one will repay him the money?”

And so he began to be exceedingly sad, both he and his wife Anna with him. And they both began to weep together, because their son did not at least return to them on the appointed day.

But his mother wept inconsolable tears, and also said: “Woe, woe to me, O my son. Why did we send you to journey far away, you: the light of our eyes, the staff of our old age, the solace of our life, the hope of our posterity?

Having all things together as one in you, we ought not to have dismissed you from us.”

And Tobit was saying to her: “Be calm, and do not be troubled. Our son is safe. That man, with whom we sent him, is faithful enough.”

Yet she was by no means able to be consoled. But, leaping up every day, she looked all round, and traveled around all the ways, by which there seemed any hope that he might return, so that she might possibly see him coming from afar.

In truth, Raguel said to his son-in-law, “Remain here, and I will send a message of your health to your father Tobit.”

And Tobias said to him, “I know that my father and my mother have now counted the days, and their spirit must be tortured within them.”

And when Raguel had repeatedly petitioned Tobias, and he was by no means willing to listen to him, he delivered Sarah to him, and half of all his substance: with men and women servants, with sheep, camels, and cows, and with much money. And he dismissed him away, in safety and gladness, from him,

saying: “May the holy Angel of the Lord be with your journey, and may he lead you through unharmed, and may you discover that all is right concerning your parents, and may my eyes see your sons before I die.”

And the parents, taking hold of their daughter, kissed her and let her go:

admonishing her to honor her father-in-law, to love her husband, to guide the family, to govern the household, and to behave irreproachably herself.(a)

Die Eltern beklagen die lange Abwesenheit ihres Sohnes Tobias. Er macht sich auf den Weg, um zurückzukehren

Als aber Tobias der Hochzeit wegen säumte, ward sein Vater Tobias besorgt und sprach: Warum säumt mein Sohn wohl, oder warum hält man ihn dort zurück?

Ist Gabel vielleicht gestorben, dass ihm niemand das Geld zurückgibt?

Und er fing an, sich sehr zu betrüben, und Anna, sein Weib, mit ihm, und beide fingen an, miteinander zu weinen, weil ihr Sohn an dem bestimmten Tag nicht wieder zu ihnen zurückkehrte.

Seine Mutter also weinte mit unstillbaren Tränen und sprach: Ach, ach, mein Sohn! Warum haben wir dich in die Fremde geschickt, du Licht unserer Augen, du Stütze unseres Alters, du Trost unseres Lebens, du Hoffnung unserer Nachkommenschaft?

In dir allein hatten wir alles zugleich, dich hätten wir nicht von uns fortschicken sollen.

Da sprach Tobias zu ihr: Sei still und betrübe dich nicht, unser Sohn ist wohlbehalten; jener Mann, mit dem wir ihn geschickt haben, ist ganz zuverlässig.

Sie aber wollte sich auf keine Weise trösten lassen, sondern eilte täglich hinaus, sah sich nach allen Seiten um und ging auf allen Wegen herum, auf denen Hoffnung zu sein schien, dass er dorther kommen könnte, damit sie ihn, wo möglich, von weitem kommen sähe.

Raguel aber sprach zu seinem Schwiegersohne: Bleibe hier, ich will einen Boten zu Tobias, deinem Vater, senden, dass es dir wohl geht.

Tobias aber sprach zu ihm: Ich weiß, dass mein Vater und meine Mutter schon die Tage zählen und ihr Herz sich ängstigt.

Als nun Raguel den Tobias mit vielen Worten gebeten, dieser aber ihn auf keine Weise hören wollte, übergab er ihm Sara und die Hälfte seiner ganzen Habe an Knechten, an Mägden, an Schafen, an Kamelen, an Kühen und an vielem Gelde, und entließ ihn gesund und froh von sich,

indem er sprach: Der heilige Engel des Herrn sei mit euch auf der Reise und geleite euch wohlbehalten, möget ihr alles wohl finden bei euern Eltern und mögen meine Augen eure Kinder sehen, bevor ich sterbe!

Dann umarmten die Eltern ihre Tochter und küssten sie und ließen sie ziehen,

indem sie sie ermahnten, ihre Schwiegereltern zu ehren, ihren Mann zu lieben, ihr Gesinde zu leiten, das Haus zu verwalten und sich selbst untadelhaft zu führen.
