- Kapitel 21 -

(Exodus 30:11–16; 2 Samuel 24:1–9)

And Satan stoode vp against Israel, and prouoked Dauid to nomber Israel.

Therefore Dauid said to Ioab, and to the rulers of the people, Go, and nomber Israel from Beer-sheba euen to Dan, and bring it to me, that I may knowe the nomber of them.

And Ioab answered, The Lord increase his people an hundreth times so many as they be, O my lord the King: are they not all my lords seruats? wherefore doeth my lord require this thing? why should he be a cause of trespasse to Israel?

Neuerthelesse the Kings word preuailed against Ioab. And Ioab departed and went thorowe all Israel, and returned to Ierusalem.

And Ioab gaue the nomber and summe of the people vnto Dauid: and all Israel were eleuen hundreth thousande men that drewe sword: and Iudah was foure hundreth and seuentie thousande men that drewe sword.

But the Leuites and Beniamin counted he not among them: for the Kings worde was abominable to Ioab.

Judgment for David’s Sin

(2 Samuel 24:10–14)

And God was displeased with this thing: therefore he smote Israel.

Then Dauid saide vnto God, I haue sinned greatly, because I haue done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, remooue the iniquitie of thy seruant: for I haue done very foolishly.

And the Lord spake vnto Gad Dauids Seer, saying,

Goe and tell Dauid, saying, Thus saith the Lord, I offer thee three thinges: choose thee one of them, that I may doe it vnto thee.

So Gad came to Dauid, and sayde vnto him, Thus saith the Lord, Take to thee

Either three yeeres famine, or three moneths to be destroyed before thine aduersaries, and the sworde of thine enemies to take thee, or els the sworde of the Lord and pestilence in the lande three dayes, that the Angel of the Lord may destroy throughout all the coastes of Israel: nowe therefore aduise thee, what word I shall bring againe to him that sent me.

And Dauid said vnto Gad, I am in a wonderfull strait. let me nowe fall into the hande of the Lord: for his mercies are exceeding great, and let me not fall into the hande of man.

A Plague on Israel

(2 Samuel 24:15–17)

So the Lord sent a pestilence in Israel, and there fell of Israel seuentie thousande men.

And God sent the Angel into Ierusalem to destroy it. And as he was destroying, the Lord behelde, and repented of the euill and sayde to the Angel that destroyed, It is nowe ynough, let thine hande cease. Then the Angel of the Lord stoode by the thresshing floore of Ornan the Iebusite.

And Dauid lift vp his eyes, and sawe the Angel of the Lord stande betweene the earth and the heauen with his sworde drawen in his hand, and stretched out towarde Ierusalem. Then Dauid and the Elders of Israel, which were clothed in sacke, fell vpon their faces.

And Dauid said vnto God, Is it not I that commanded to nomber the people? It is euen I that haue sinned and haue committed euil, but these sheepe what haue they done? O Lord my God, I beseech thee, let thine hande be on me and on my fathers house, and not on thy people for their destruction.

David Builds an Altar

(2 Samuel 24:18–25)

Then the Angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to Dauid, that Dauid should goe vp, and set vp an altar vnto the Lord in the thresshing floore of Ornan the Iebusite.

So Dauid went vp according to the saying of Gad, which he had spoken in the Name of the Lord.

And Ornan turned about, and sawe the Angel, and his foure sonnes, that were with him, hid them selues, and Ornan thresshed wheat.

And as Dauid came to Ornan, Ornan looked and sawe Dauid, and went out of the thresshing floore, and bowed himselfe to Dauid with his face to the grounde.

And Dauid saide to Ornan, Giue me the place of thy thresshing floore, that I may builde an altar therein vnto the Lord: giue it me for sufficient money, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

Then Ornan saide vnto Dauid, Take it to thee, and let my lord the King do that which seemeth him good: loe, I giue thee bullockes for burnt offrings, and thresshing instruments for wood, and wheat for meate offring, I giue it all.

And King Dauid saide to Ornan, Not so: but I will bye it for sufficient money: for I wil not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offrings without cost.

So Dauid gaue to Ornan for that place sixe hundreth shekels of golde by weight.

And Dauid built there an altar vnto the Lord, and offred burnt offrings, and peace offrings, and called vpon the Lord, and he answered him by fire from heauen vpon the altar of burnt offring.

And when the Lord had spoken to the Angel, he put vp his sworde againe into his sheath.

At that time when Dauid sawe that the Lord had heard him in the thresshing floore of Ornan the Iebusite, then he sacrificed there.

(But the Tabernacle of the Lord which Moses had made in the wildernesse, and the altar of burnt offring were at that season in the hie place at Gibeon.

And Dauid could not go before it to aske counsel at God: for he was afraide of the sworde of the Angel of the Lord.)

Die Volkszählung in Israel und Juda

(2. Mose 30,11-16; 2. Samuel 24,1-9)

Satan aber erhob sich gegen Israel und reizte David an, Israel zu zählen.

Und David sprach zu Joab und zu den Fürsten des Volkes: Gehet hin und zählet Israel von Bersabee an bis Dan und berichtet mir die Zahl, dass ich sie wisse.

Da antwortete Joab: Möchte der Herr zu seinem Volke hundertmal so viel hinzutun, als ihrer sind; sind sie nicht alle deine Diener, mein Herr und König? Warum begehrt mein Herr dies, was Israel zur Sünde gerechnet würde?

Aber der König beharrte auf seinem Befehle; deshalb ging Joab aus, zog durch ganz Israel und kehrte nach Jerusalem zurück.

Und er gab David die Zahl derer an, zu denen er gezogen war; die ganze Zahl Israels tausendmaltausend und hunderttausend Mann, welche das Schwert führten; von Juda aber vierhundertundsiebzigtausend Krieger.

Denn Levi und Benjamin hatte er nicht gezählt, weil Joab des Königs Befehl wider Willen vollzog.

(2. Samuel 24,10-14)

Gott aber missfiel das, was befohlen war, und er schlug Israel.

Da sprach David zu Gott: Ich habe schwer gesündigt, dass ich dieses getan. Ich bitte dich, nimm die Schuld deines Dieners hinweg, denn ich habe töricht gehandelt.

Der Herr aber redete zu Gad, dem Seher Davids, und sprach:

Gehe hin und rede zu David: Also spricht der Herr: Unter drei Dingen lasse ich dir die Wahl; wähle eines, welches du willst, dies werde ich dir tun.

Gad also kam zu David und sprach zu ihm: So spricht der Herr: Wähle, was du willst!

Entweder drei Jahre Hungersnot, oder drei Monate Flucht vor deinen Feinden, so dass du ihrem Schwert nicht entrinnen kannst, oder dass drei Tage das Schwert des Herrn, nämlich Pest, im Lande wüte und der Engel des Herrn im ganzen Gebiete von Israel würge; so siehe denn zu, was ich dem, der mich gesandt hat, antworten soll.

Da sprach David zu Gad: Von allen Seiten fühle ich mich bedrängt; aber besser ist es für mich, in die Hand des Herrn zu fallen, denn seine Erbarmungen sind groß, als in die Hände der Menschen.

(2. Samuel 24,15-17)

Der Herr sandte also eine Pest über Israel; und es fielen von Israel siebzigtausend Mann.

Und er sandte einen Engel nach Jerusalem, um es zu schlagen; als es aber geschlagen ward, sah der Herr hernieder und hatte Erbarmen ob der Größe des Unglücks und befahl dem Engel, der schlug: Genug! Deine Hand halte nunmehr ein! Der Engel des Herrn aber stand bei der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan.

Als nun David seine Augen erhob, sah er den Engel des Herrn zwischen Himmel und Erde stehen, ein gezücktes Schwert in seiner Hand, gegen Jerusalem ausgestreckt. Da fiel er mit den Ältesten, die gleich ihm mit Bußgewändern angetan waren, auf sein Angesicht zur Erde nieder.

Und David sprach zu Gott: Bin ich es nicht, der das Volk zu zählen befohlen hat? Ich bin es, der gesündigt, ich, der Übles getan hat! Was hat diese Herde verschuldet? Herr, mein Gott: lass deine Hand sich gegen mich und gegen das Haus meines Vaters wenden; nicht aber möge dein Volk geschlagen werden.

(2. Samuel 24,18-25)

Der Engel des Herrn befahl aber Gad, dem David zu sagen, er solle hingehen und Gott, dem Herrn, auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan einen Altar errichten.

Da ging David hin, dem Worte Gads gemäß, das er zu ihm im Namen des Herrn geredet hatte.

Als Ornan aufschaute und mit seinen vier Söhnen, die bei ihm waren, den Engel sah, verbargen sie sich; er drosch nämlich gerade den Weizen auf der Tenne.

Als nun David zu Ornan kam und Ornan ihn erblickte, ging derselbe ihm aus der Tenne entgegen und fiel vor ihm auf sein Angesicht zur Erde.

David sprach zu ihm: Gib mir den Platz deiner Tenne, dass ich dem Herrn darauf einen Altar baue; so dass du so viel Geld empfängst, als sie wert ist, und die Plage von dem Volke weicht.

Ornan aber sprach zu David: Nimm sie hin und mein Herr und König tue, was ihm gut dünkt; auch die Rinder gebe ich zum Brandopfer und die Dreschwagen für das Holz und den Weizen als Opfer; alles will ich gern geben.

Da antwortete ihm der König David: Nicht also! sondern ich werde dir Geld geben, so viel sie wert ist; denn ich darf es dir nicht abnehmen, um so dem Herrn ohne Kosten Brandopfer darzubringen.

So gab David dem Ornan für den Platz sechshundert Sekel vollwichtigen Goldes.

Sodann erbaute er dem Herrn daselbst einen Altar und brachte Brandopfer und Friedopfer dar und rief den Herrn an. Und dieser erhörte ihn, indem er Feuer vom Himmel auf den Brandopferaltar sandte.

Und der Herr gebot dem Engel und dieser barg sein Schwert in die Scheide.

Alsbald also, da David sah, dass ihn der Herr auf der Tenne des Jebusiters Ornan erhört hatte, brachte er daselbst Schlachtopfer dar.

Das Zelt des Herrn aber, welches Moses in der Wüste gemacht hatte, und der Brandopferaltar waren zu jener Zeit auf der Höhe von Gabaon.

David aber wagte nicht, zu dem Altare zu treten, um daselbst Gott anzuflehen; denn er war zu sehr von Schrecken ergriffen, als er das Schwert des Engels des Herrn sah.
