- Kapitel 20 -

Then there was come thither a wicked man (named Sheba the sonne of Bichri, a man of Iemini) and hee blew the trumpet, and saide, Wee haue no part in Dauid, neither haue we inheritance in the sonne of Ishai: euery man to his tents, O Israel.

So euery man of Israel went from Dauid and followed Sheba the sonne of Bichri: but the men of Iudah claue fast vnto their King, from Iorden euen to Ierusalem.

When Dauid then came to his house to Ierusalem, the King tooke the ten women his concubines, that hee had left behinde him to keepe the house, and put them in warde, and fed them, but lay no more with them: but they were enclosed vnto the day of their death, liuing in widowhode.

Then sayde the King to Amasa, Assemble me the men of Iudah within three dayes, and be thou here present.

So Amasa went to assemble Iudah, but hee taried longer then the time which he had appoynted him.

Then Dauid sayd to Abishai, Now shall Sheba the sonne of Bichri doe vs more harme then did Absalom: take thou therefore thy lords seruants and follow after him, lest he get him walled cities, and escape vs.

And there went out after him Ioabs men, and the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and all the mightie men: and they departed out of Ierusalem, to follow after Sheba the sonne of Bichri.

When they were at the great stone, which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them, and Ioabs garment, that hee had put on, was girded vnto him, and vpon it was a sword girded, which hanged on his loynes in the sheath, and as hee went, it vsed to fall out.

And Ioab sayde to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? and Ioab tooke Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kisse him.

But Amasa tooke no heede to the sworde that was in Ioabs hande: for therewith he smote him in the fift rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and smote him not the second time: so he dyed. then Ioab and Abishai his brother followed after Sheba the sonne of Bichri.

And one of Ioabs men stoode by him, and saide, He that fauoureth Ioab, and hee that is of Dauids part, let him go after Ioab.

And Amasa wallowed in blood in the mids of the way: and when the man sawe that all the people stood still, he remooued Amasa out of the way into the fielde, and cast a cloth vpon him, because he saw that euery one that came by him, stoode still.

When hee was remoued out of the way, euerie man went after Ioab, to follow after Sheba the sonne of Bichri.

And he went through all the tribes of Israel vnto Abel, and Bethmaachah and all places of Berim: and they gathered together, and went also after him.

So they came, and besieged him in Abel, neere to Bethmaachah: and they cast vp a mount against the citie, and the people thereof stood on the ramper, and al the people that was with Ioab, destroyed and cast downe the wall.

Then cried a wise woman out of the citie, Heare, heare, I pray you, say vnto Ioab, Come thou hither, that I may speake with thee.

And when hee came neere vnto her, the woman said, Art thou Ioab? And he answered, Yea. And she said to him, Heare the wordes of thine handmaid. And he answered, I do heare.

Then shee spake thus, They spake in the olde time, saying, They shoulde aske of Abel. and so haue they continued.

I am one of them, that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: and thou goest about to destroy a citie, and a mother in Israel: why wilt thou deuoure the inheritance of the Lord?

And Ioab answered, and said, God forbid, God forbid it me, that I should deuoure, or destroy it.

The matter is not so, but a man of mout Ephraim (Sheba ye sonne of Bichri by name) hath lift vp his had against ye King, euen against Dauid: deliuer vs him onely, and I will depart from the citie. And the woman saide vnto Ioab, Beholde, his head shalbe throwen to thee ouer the wall.

Then the woman went vnto all the people with her wisedome, and they cut off the head of Sheba the sonne of Bichri, and cast it to Ioab: the he blewe the trumpet, and they retired from the citie, euery man to his tent: and Ioab returned to Ierusalem vnto the King.

Then Ioab was ouer all the hoste of Israel, and Benaiah the sonne of Iehoiada ouer the Cherethites and ouer the Pelethies,

And Adoram ouer the tribute, and Ioshaphat the sonne of Ahilud the recorder,

And Sheia was Scribe, and Zadok and Abiathar the Priests,

And also Ira the Iairite was chiefe about Dauid.

Die Rebellion von Saba

Es begab sich ferner, dass daselbst ein Mann Belials war, mit Namen Seba, der Sohn Bochris, ein Mann aus dem Stamme Benjamin. Dieser stieß in die Posaune und sprach: Wir haben keinen Anteil an David und kein Erbe am Sohne Isais, kehre zurück in deine Hütten, Israel!

Da trennte sich ganz Israel von David und schloss sich Seba, dem Sohne Bochris, an; die Männer von Juda aber blieben ihrem Könige treu, vom Jordan bis nach Jerusalem.

Als nun der König in sein Haus zu Jerusalem kam, nahm er die zehn Nebenfrauen, welche er zur Bewachung des Hauses zurückgelassen, und versetzte sie in ein Warthaus, für ihren Unterhalt Sorge tragend, ging jedoch nicht zu ihnen, sondern sie waren abgeschlossen bis zum Tage ihres Todes und lebten wie Witwen.

Der König aber sprach zu Amasa: Rufe mir alle Männer von Juda auf den dritten Tag zusammen und sei auch du zugegen!

Amasa zog also hin, um Juda zu sammeln, aber er blieb über die bestimmte Zeit aus, die ihm der König festgesetzt hatte.

Da sprach David zu Abisai: Nun wird uns Seba, der Sohn Bochris, noch mehr bedrängen als Absalom; darum nimm die Knechte deines Herrn und setze ihm nach, damit er nicht etwa feste Städte treffe und uns entfliehe.

Die Männer Joabs also und die Cerether und Phelether, zogen mit ihm aus und alle Tapferen verließen Jerusalem, um Seba, dem Sohne Bochris, nachzusetzen.

Als sie aber bei dem großen Steine waren, der in Gabaon ist, kam ihnen Amasa entgegen. Joab aber hatte nach dem Maße seiner Kleidung ein enges Untergewand an und darüber ein Schwert gegürtet, welches in der Scheide an seinen Lenden herabhing, aber so gemacht war, dass er durch eine leichte Bewegung herausgehen und verwunden konnte.

Da sprach Joab zu Amasa: Sei gegrüßt, mein Bruder! Und er fasste mit der rechten Hand das Kinn Amasas, als wollte er ihn küssen.

Amasa aber gab auf das Schwert, welches Joab hatte, nicht acht und dieser stieß es ihm in die Seite, dass seine Eingeweide auf die Erde herausfielen, und er starb, ohne dass jener ihm eine zweite Wunde versetzte. Joab aber und sein Bruder Abisai verfolgten Seba, den Sohn Bochris.

Während dessen blieben einige Männer von den Gefährten Joabs bei der Leiche Amasas stehen und sprachen: Sehet, dieser wollte an Joabs Statt David am nächsten stehen!

Amasa aber lag mit Blut bedeckt mitten im Wege. Als nun ein Mann sah, dass alles Volk stehen blieb, um ihn anzusehen, schaffte er Amasa von dem Wege hinweg auf das Feld und deckte ein Gewand über ihn, damit die Vorübergehenden nicht seinetwegen stehen blieben.

Nachdem jener also von dem Wege hinweggeschafft war, gingen alle vorüber und folgten Joab, um Seba, dem Sohne Bochris, nachzusetzen.

Dieser aber war durch alle Stämme Israels bis nach Abela und Bethmaacha gezogen und alle auserlesenen Männer hatten sich um ihn gesammelt.

Da kamen sie und griffen ihn in Abela und Bethmaacha an und umgaben die Stadt mit Bollwerken, so dass sie umlagert war, und das ganze Heer, welches mit Joab war, bemühte sich, die Mauern zu zerstören.

Da rief eine weise Frau aus der Stadt: Höret, höret! Saget zu Joab: Komme hierher, dass ich mit dir rede!

Als dieser nun zu ihr gekommen war, sprach sie zu ihm: Bist du Joab? Er antwortete: Ich bin es. Da sagte sie zu ihm also: Höre die Worte deiner Magd! Er antwortete: Ich höre.

Sie sprach wiederum. Im alten Sprichworte heißt es: Wer fragen will, frage in Abela, und so kamen sie an´s Ziel.

Bin ich nicht diejenige, welche Wahrheit antwortet in Israel, und du suchst eine Stadt zu zerstören und eine Mutter zu vernichten in Israel? Warum willst du das Erbe des Herrn zugrunde richten?

Joab antwortete und sprach: Fern, fern sei dies von mir! Ich richte nicht zu Grunde und zerstöre nicht.

Nicht so verhält sich die Sache, sondern ein Mann vom Gebirge Ephraim, Seba mit Namen, der Sohn Bochris, hat seine Hand gegen den König David erhoben; gebet diesen allein heraus, so werden wir von der Stadt abziehen. Das Weib sprach zu Joab: Siehe, sein Kopf soll dir über die Mauer zugeworfen werden.

Da ging das Weib hinein zu allem Volke und redete weise zu ihnen und sie hieben Seba, dem Sohne Bochris, den Kopf ab und warfen ihn zu Joab hinab. Dieser ließ in die Posaune stoßen und sie zogen von der Stadt ab, ein jeder in seine Hütte, Joab aber kehrte nach Jerusalem zu dem Könige zurück.

Davids Regierungsbeamte

Joab war also über das ganze Heer Israels gesetzt und Banajas, der Sohn Jojadas, über die Cerether und Phelether,

Aduram aber über die Abgaben und Josaphat, der Sohn Ahiluds, war Kanzler.

Siva war Schreiber, Sadok aber und Abiathar waren Priester.

Ira aber, der Jairiter, war Priester Davids.
