- Kapitel 4 -

And the son of Saul hears that Abner [is] dead in Hebron, and his hands are feeble, and all of Israel has been troubled.

And two men, heads of troops, have been [to] the son of Saul, the name of the first [is] Baanah, and the name of the second Rechab, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, of the sons of Benjamin, for Beeroth is also reckoned to Benjamin,

and the Beerothites flee to Gittaim, and are sojourners there to this day.

And to Jonathan son of Saul [is] a son—lame; he was a son of five years at the coming in of the rumor of [the death of] Saul and Jonathan, out of Jezreel, and his nurse lifts him up, and flees, and it comes to pass in her hastening to flee, that he falls, and becomes lame, and his name [is] Mephibosheth.

And the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, Rechab and Baanah, go, and come in at the heat of the day to the house of Ish-Bosheth, and he is lying down—the lying down of noon;

and they have come there, to the midst of the house, taking wheat, and they strike him to the fifth [rib], and Rechab and his brother Baanah have escaped;

indeed, they come into the house, and he is lying on his bed, in the inner part of his bed-chamber, and they strike him, and put him to death, and turn his head aside, and they take his head, and go the way of the plain all the night,

and bring in the head of Ish-Bosheth to David in Hebron, and say to the king, “Behold, the head of Ish-Bosheth, son of Saul, your enemy, who sought your life; and YHWH gives vengeance to my lord the king this day, of Saul and of his seed.”

The Execution of Rechab and Baanah

And David answers Rechab and his brother Baanah, sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and says to them, “YHWH lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity,

when one is declaring to me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, and he was as a bearer of tidings in his own eyes, then I take hold on him, and slay him in Ziklag, instead of my giving to him [for] the tidings.

Also—when wicked men have slain the righteous man in his own house, on his bed; and now, do I not require his blood from your hand, and have taken you away from the earth?”

And David commands the young men, and they slay them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hang [them] over the pool in Hebron, and they have taken the head of Ish-Bosheth, and bury [it] in the burying-place of Abner in Hebron.

Ischboseth wird ermordet

Als aber Isboseth, der Sohn Sauls, hörte, dass Abner in Hebron gefallen sei, wurden seien Hände kraftlos und ganz Israel ward bestürzt.

Nun hatte der Sohn Sauls zwei Männer als Anführer von Streifscharen, der Name des einen war Baana, der Name des anderen Rechab, Söhne Remmons, des Berothiters, von den Söhnen Benjamins, denn auch Beroth wurde zu Benjamin gerechnet,

und die Berothiter waren nach Gethaim geflohen und waren daselbst Fremdlinge bis auf jene Zeit.

Jonathas aber, der Sohn Sauls, hatte einen Sohn, der an den beiden Füßen lahm war; denn als er fünf Jahre alt war und die Nachricht von Saul und Jonathas aus Jezrahel kam, nahm ihn seine Amme und floh; und da sie eilte, um zu entkommen, fiel er und ward lahm, und sein Name war Miphiboseth.

Die Söhne Remmons also, des Berothiters, Rechab und Baana, kamen und gingen während der heißen Tageszeit in das Haus Isboseths. Dieser hielt seinen Mittagsschlaf auf seinem Lager, aber auch die Türhüterin des Hauses war beim Reinigen des Weizens eingeschlafen.

Da gingen sie heimlich in das Haus, Weizen tragend, und stachen ihn in den Unterleib, Rechab und dessen Bruder Baana, und flohen.

Denn als sie in das Haus kamen, schlief er auf seinem Bette im Zimmer und sie erstachen ihn und töteten ihn; darauf schlugen sie ihm den Kopf ab und gingen die ganze Nacht hindurch den Wüstenweg entlang

und brachten das Haupt Isboseths zu David nach Hebron und sprachen zu dem Könige: Siehe, da ist der Kopf Isboseths, des Sohnes Sauls, deines Feindes, der dir nach dem Leben trachtete; aber der Herr hat heute meinem Gebieter, dem Könige, Rache gewährt an Saul und seinen Nachkommen.

David aber antwortete dem Rechab und dessen Bruder Baana, den Söhnen Remmons, des Berothiters, und sprach zu ihnen: So wahr der Herr lebt, der mein Leben aus aller Bedrängnis gerettet hat,

den, der mir berichtete und sprach: Saul ist tot, und meinte, er künde mir Glück, ließ ich ergreifen und in Sikeleg töten, während ich ihm doch hätte Lohn für seine Botschaft geben sollen;

wie viel mehr muss ich nun, da gottlose Menschen einen Unschuldigen in seinem Hause auf seinem Bette getötet haben, nicht sein Blut von eurer Hand fordern und euch von dem Erdboden vertilgen?

Da gab David seinen Leuten Befehl und sie töteten jene, alsdann hieben sie ihnen Hände und Füße ab und hingen diese am Teiche zu Hebron auf, das Haupt Isboseths aber nahmen sie und begruben es im Grabe Abners zu Hebron.
