Esther becomes queen

After these things, at the ceasing of the fury of King Ahasuerus, he has remembered Vashti, and that which she did, and that which has been decreed concerning her;

and servants of the king, his ministers, say, “Let them seek for the king young women, virgins, of good appearance,

and the king appoints inspectors in all provinces of his kingdom, and they gather every young woman—virgin, of good appearance—to Shushan the palace, to the house of the women, to the hand of Hegai eunuch of the king, keeper of the women, and to give their purifications,

and the young woman who is good in the eyes of the king reigns instead of Vashti”; and the thing is good in the eyes of the king, and he does so.

A man, a Jew, there has been in Shushan the palace, and his name [is] Mordecai son of Jair, son of Shimei, son of Kish, a Benjamite—

who had been removed from Jerusalem with the expulsion that was removed with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon removed—

and he is supporting Hadassah—she [is] Esther—daughter of his uncle, for she has neither father nor mother, and the young woman [is] of beautiful form, and of good appearance, and at the death of her father and her mother Mordecai has taken her to himself for a daughter.

And it comes to pass, in the word of the king, even his law, being heard, and in many young women being gathered to Shushan the palace, to the hand of Hegai, that Esther is taken to the house of the king, to the hand of Hegai, keeper of the women,

and the young woman is good in his eyes, and she receives kindness before him, and he hurries her purifications and her portions—to give to her, and the seven young women who are provided—to give to her, from the house of the king, and he changes her and her young women to a good [place in] the house of the women.

Esther has not declared her people, and her family, for Mordecai has laid a charge on her that she does not declare [it];

and during every day Mordecai is walking up and down before the court of the house of the women to know the welfare of Esther, and what is done with her.

And in the drawing near of the turn of each young woman to come in to King Ahasuerus, at the end of there being to her—according to the law of the women—twelve months, for so they fulfill the days of their purifications; six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes, and with the purifications of women,

and with this the young woman has come in to the king, all that she says is given to her to go in with her out of the house of the women to the house of the king;

in the evening she has gone in, and in the morning she has turned back to the second house of the women, to the hand of Shaashgaz eunuch of the king, keeper of the concubines; she does not come in anymore to the king except the king has delighted in her, and she has been called by name.

And in the drawing near of the turn of Esther—daughter of Abihail, uncle of Mordecai, whom he had taken to himself for a daughter—to come in to the king, she has not sought a thing except that which Hegai eunuch of the king, keeper of the women, says, and Esther is receiving grace in the eyes of all seeing her.

And Esther is taken to King Ahasuerus, to his royal house, in the tenth month—it [is] the month of Tebeth—in the seventh year of his reign,

and the king loves Esther above all the women, and she receives grace and kindness before him above all the virgins, and he sets a royal crown on her head, and causes her to reign instead of Vashti,

and the king makes a great banquet to all his heads and his servants—the banquet of Esther—and has made a release to the provinces, and gives gifts as a memorial of the king.

Mordecai discovers a conspiracy

And in the virgins being gathered a second time, then Mordecai is sitting in the gate of the king;

Esther is not declaring her family and her people, as Mordecai has laid a charge on her, and the saying of Mordecai Esther is doing as when she was truly with him.

In those days, when Mordecai is sitting in the gate of the king, has Bigthan been angry, and Teresh (two of the eunuchs of the king, the keepers of the threshold), and they seek to put forth a hand on King Ahasuerus,

and the thing is known to Mordecai, and he declares [it] to Esther the queen, and Esther speaks to the king in the name of Mordecai,

and the thing is sought out, and found, and both of them are hanged on a tree, and it is written in the scroll of the Chronicles before the king.

Esther wird Königin

Als sich nach diesen Begebenheiten der Zorn des Königs Assuerus gelegt hatte, gedachte er der Vasthi und dessen, was sie getan und was über sie gekommen war.

Da sprachen die Höflinge des Königs und seine Diener: Man suche dem Könige schöne Jungfrauen

und sende Leute aus, die in allen Ländern schöne Jungfrauen suchen und sie in die Stadt Susan führen und in das Frauenhaus bringen unter die Obhut des Egeus, des Kämmerers, welcher der Vorgesetzte und Hüter der königlichen Frauen ist; und sie mögen Frauenschmuck erhalten und was sonst zu ihrem Gebrauche vonnöten ist.

Welche dann unter allen den Augen des Königs gefällt, diese werde Königin an Vasthis Stelle. Dieser Vorschlag gefiel dem Könige und er befahl zu tun, wie sie geraten hatten.

Nun war ein Jude in der Stadt Susan, mit Namen Mardochäus, der Sohn Jairs, des Sohnes Semeis, des Sohnes Kis, vom Stamme Benjamin,

welcher von Jerusalem zu der Zeit weggeführt war, als Nabuchodonosor, der König von Babylon, Jechonias, den König von Juda, wegführte.

Dieser war der Nährvater seiner Bruderstochter Edissa, welche mit anderem Namen Esther hieß und beide Eltern verloren hatte. Sie war sehr schön und anmutig. Nachdem also ihr Vater und ihre Mutter gestorben waren, hatte Mardochäus sie als seine Tochter angenommen.

Als nun der Erlass des Königs kundgeworden war und nach seinem Befehle viele schöne Jungfrauen nach Susan gebracht und dem Kämmerlinge Egeus übergeben wurden, ward ihm unter den übrigen Mädchen auch Esther übergeben, um unter der Zahl der Frauen bewahrt zu werden.

Sie gefiel ihm und fand Gnade vor seinen Augen. Daher befahl er einem Kämmerlinge, den Frauenschmuck zu beschleunigen und ihr ihren Teil zu geben, dazu sieben der schönsten Mädchen aus dem Hause des Königs und sie wie ihre Dienerinnen zu schmücken und auszustatten.

Sie aber wollte ihm ihr Volk und Vaterland nicht kundgeben, denn Mardochäus hatte ihr befohlen, gänzlich von dieser Sache zu schweigen.

Täglich ging er vor dem Vorhofe des Hauses, in dem die auserlesenen Jungfrauen verwahrt wurden, auf und ab, besorgt um das Wohl Esthers und begierig zu erfahren, wie es ihr gehe.

Bis aber die Zeit für ein jedes Mädchen der Reihe nach kam, zum Könige zu gehen, vergingen, ehe alles geschehen war, was zur Pflege der Frauen gehörte, zwölf Monate; sechs Monate nämlich wurden sie mit Myrrhenöl gesalbt und andere sechs Monate gebrauchten sie allerlei Salben und Spezereien.

Wenn sie dann zu dem Könige gingen, erhielten sie, was sie als zum Schmucke gehörig verlangten; und wie sie geschmückt sein wollten, so gingen sie aus dem Frauensaal in das Gemach des Königs.

Die, welche am Abend hineingegangen war, kam am Morgen heraus und wurde von da in ein zweites Haus geführt, das unter der Obhut des Kämmerers Susagazi war, welcher über die Nebenfrauen des Königs die Aufsicht führte; sie durften alsdann nicht wieder zu dem Könige kommen, es sei denn, dass der König es wollte und sie ausdrücklich kommen hieß.

Als nun die Reihenfolge um war, kam auch der Tag heran, an welchem Esther, die Tochter Abihails, des Bruders des Mardochäus, welche dieser als Tochter angenommen hatte, zum König gehen sollte. Sie verlangte keinen Frauenschmuck, sondern was der Kämmerling Egeus, der Hüter der Jungfrauen, wollte, gab er ihr zum Schmuck. Sie war nämlich sehr wohlgestaltet und unglaublich schön, holdselig und anmutig in aller Augen.

So ward sie denn in das Gemach des Königs Assuerus geführt im zehnten Monate, welcher Tebeth heißt, im siebenten Jahre seiner Herrschaft.

Der König gewann sie lieber als alle anderen Frauen, sie fand Gnade und Gunst bei ihm mehr als alle anderen Frauen und er setzte die Königskrone auf ihr Haupt und machte sie zur Königin an Vasthis Statt.

Sodann ließ er ein prächtiges Gastmahl für alle seine Fürsten und Diener zurichten, zur Feier seiner Verbindung und Hochzeit mit Esther. Auch gewährte er allen Ländern Nachlass und verteilte mit fürstlicher Freigebigkeit Geschenke.

Mardochai entdeckt eine Verschwörung

Als nun ein zweites Mal Jungfrauen gesucht und zusammengebracht wurden, blieb Mardochäus an der Pforte des Königs.

Esther aber hatte ihr Vaterland und Volk noch nicht kundgegeben, wie es ihr befohlen war; denn sie beobachtete alles, was er befahl, und tat alles so, wie sie zu jener Zeit gewohnt war, da er sie noch als Kind aufzog.

Zur Zeit also, da Mardochäus an der Pforte des Königs weilte, wurden Bagathan und Thares, zwei Kämmerer des Königs, welche Türhüter waren und die erste Schwelle des Palastes beaufsichtigten, erbittert und wollten sich wider den König erheben und ihn ermorden.

Dies blieb Mardochäus nicht verborgen und er teilte es alsbald der Königin Esther mit und diese dem Könige im Namen des Mardochäus, der ihr die Sache hinterbracht hatte.

Als man nun nachforschte und es richtig befand, wurden beide an den Galgen gehängt, das Ereignis aber ward in die Jahrbücher vor dem Könige eingetragen.
