- Kapitel 5 -

Esther's banquet

And it comes to pass on the third day, that Esther puts on royalty, and stands in the inner-court of the house of the king in front of the house of the king, and the king is sitting on his royal throne, in the royal-house, opposite the opening of the house,

and it comes to pass, at the king’s seeing Esther the queen standing in the court, she has received grace in his eyes, and the king holds out to Esther the golden scepter that [is] in his hand, and Esther draws near, and touches the top of the scepter.

And the king says to her, “What do you [want], Esther, O queen? And what [is] your request? To the half of the kingdom—and it is given to you.”

And Esther says, “If to the king [it be] good, the king comes in, and Haman, today, to the banquet that I have made for him”;

and the king says, “Hurry Haman—to do the word of Esther”; and the king comes in, and Haman, to the banquet that Esther has made.

And the king says to Esther, during the banquet of wine, “What [is] your petition? And it is given to you; and what [is] your request? To the half of the kingdom—and it is done.”

And Esther answers and says, “My petition and my request [is]:

if I have found grace in the eyes of the king, and if to the king [it be] good, to give my petition, and to perform my request, the king comes, and Haman, to the banquet that I make for them, and tomorrow I do according to the word of the king.”

Haman's plot against Mordecai

And Haman goes forth on that day rejoicing and glad in heart, and at Haman’s seeing Mordecai in the gate of the king, and he has not risen nor moved for him, then is Haman full of fury against Mordecai.

And Haman forces himself, and comes into his house, and sends, and brings in his friends, and his wife Zeresh,

and Haman recounts to them the glory of his wealth, and the abundance of his sons, and all that with which the king made him great, and with which he lifted him up above the heads and servants of the king.

And Haman says, “Indeed, Esther the queen brought none in with the king, to the feast that she made, except myself, and also for tomorrow I am called to her, with the king,

and all this is not profitable to me, during all the time that I am seeing Mordecai the Jew sitting in the gate of the king.”

And his wife Zeresh says to him, and all his friends, “Let them prepare a tree, in height fifty cubits, and in the morning speak to the king, and they hang Mordecai on it, and go in with the king to the banquet rejoicing”; and the thing is good before Haman, and he prepares the tree.

Esthers Festmahl

Am dritten Tage aber legte Esther ihre königlichen Gewänder an und trat in den inneren Vorhof des königlichen Hauses, der Halle des Königs gegenüber. Dieser saß auf seinem Throne im Versammlungsorte des Palastes, dem Eingange des Hauses gegenüber.

Als er nun die Königin Esther stehen sah, gefiel sie seinen Augen und er streckte das goldene Zepter, das er in der Hand hielt, gegen sie aus. Da trat Esther hinzu und küsste die Spitze seines Zepters.

Dann sprach der König zu ihr: Was willst du, Königin Esther? Was ist dein Begehren? Auch wenn du die Hälfte des Reiches begehrst, soll sie dir gegeben werden!

Sie antwortete: Wenn es dem Könige gefällt, so bitte ich, du wollest heute mit Aman zu mir zu dem Mahle kommen, das ich bereitet habe.

Sogleich sprach der König: Rufet eilends Aman, dass er Esthers Willen Folge leiste. So kamen der König und Aman also zum Gastmahle, das die Königin ihnen bereitet hatte.

Da sprach der König zu ihr, nachdem er Wein in Fülle getrunken: Was willst du, dass dir zuteil werde, und was begehrst du? Auch wenn du die Hälfte meines Reiches begehrst, sollst du sie erhalten.

Esther antwortete ihm: Meine Bitte und mein Begehren ist dies:

Wenn ich Gnade vor dem Antlitze des Königs gefunden habe und wenn es dem Könige gefällt, mir zu gewähren, was ich begehre, und meine Bitte zu erfüllen, so möge der König mit Aman zu dem Mahle kommen, was ich ihnen bereitet habe, und morgen werde ich dem Könige meinen Wunsch eröffnen.

Hamans Komplott gegen Mardochai

Aman also ging an jenem Tage fröhlich und heiter von dannen. Als er aber Mardochäus vor dem Tore des Palastes sitzen sah, wie er nicht allein nicht vor ihm aufstand, sondern sich auch nicht einmal von der Stelle bewegte, auf der er saß, ward er sehr zornig.,

doch verbarg er seinen Zorn. Als er aber nach Hause zurückgekehrt war, ließ er seine Freunde und Zares, sein Weib, zu sich rufen

und sprach vor ihnen über die Größe seiner Reichtümer und die Menge seiner Söhne, und wie hoch ihn der König über alle seine Fürsten und Diener erhoben habe.

Darnach fügte er hinzu: Auch die Königin Esther hat keinen andern zum Mahle mit dem Könige eingeladen als mich, bei ihr werde ich auch morgen mit dem Könige speisen.

Aber wenn ich gleich dies alles habe, so glaube ich doch nichts zu haben, solange ich Mardochäus, den Juden, vor der Pforte des Königs sitzen sehe.

Da antworteten ihm seine Gemahlin Zares und alle seine Freunde: Lass einen hohen Balken aufrichten, fünfzig Ellen hoch, und sage morgen dem Könige, dass man Mardochäus daran aufhängen solle, so wirst du mit dem Könige fröhlich zum Gastmahle gehen. Dieser Rat gefiel ihm und er ließ ein hohes Kreuz aufrichten.
