- Kapitel 19 -

(2 Samuel 10:1–8)

Some time later, Nahash, the king of the Ammon people group, died. Then his son Hanun became their king.
2
When David heard about that, he thought to himself, “Nahash was kind to me, so I will be kind to his son.” So David sent some officials there, to tell Hanun that he was sorry to hear that Hanun’s father had died. But when David’s officials came to Hanun in the land where the Ammonite lived,

the leaders of the Ammon people group said to Hanun, “Do you think that David is really to honor your father that King David is sending these men to say that he is sorry that your father died? We think that his men have come to look around our city in order to determine how his army can conquer us.”

Hanun believed what they said; so he commanded some soldiers who seized the officials whom David had sent, and shaved off their beards, and insulted them by cutting off the lower part of their robes, and then sent them away.

The officials were greatly humiliated. When David found out about what had happened to his officials, he sent some messengers to them to tell them, “Stay at Jericho until your beards have grown again, and then return home.”

Then the leaders of the Ammon people group realized that they had greatly insulted David. So Hanun and some of his officials sent thirty-three thousand kilograms of silver to hire chariots and chariot drivers from the regions of Aram Naharaim, Aram Maacah and Zobah northeast of Israel.

They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and chariot drivers, as well as the kings of the region of Maacah and their armies. They came and set up their tents near the city of Medeba in the region of Moab. The soldiers from the Ammon people group also marched out and stood in their positions at the entrance to their capital city, Rabbah.

When David heard about that, he sent Joab and all his army.

The soldiers of the Ammon people group came out of their city and lined up for battle at the entrance to their capital city, Rabbah. Meanwhile, the other kings who had come with their armies stood in their positions in the open fields.

David Defeats Ammon and Aram

(2 Samuel 10:9–19)

Joab saw that there were groups of enemy soldiers in front of his troops and behind his troops. So he selected some of the best Israelite troops and put them in positions to fight against the soldiers of Aram.

He appointed his older brother Abishai to be the commander of his other soldiers and he told them to stand in their positions in front of the army of the Ammon people group.
12
Joab said to them, “If the soldiers from Aram are too strong for us to defeat them, then your soldiers must come and help us. But if the soldiers from the Ammon people group are too strong for you to defeat them, then my soldiers will come and help your men.
13
We must be strong and fight hard to defend our people and our cities that belong to our God. Yahweh will do what he considers to be good.”

So Joab and his troops advanced to fight the army of Aram; and the soldiers from Aram were driven away by the army of Israel.
15
And when the soldiers of the Ammon people group saw that the soldiers from Aram were running away, they also started to run away from Abishai and his army, and they retreated back inside the city. So Joab and his army returned to Jerusalem.

After the leaders of the army of Aram realized that they had been defeated by the army of Israel, they sent messengers to another part of Aram on the east side of the Euphrates river, and brought troops from there to the battle area, with Shophak, the commander of Hadadezer’s army, leading them.
17
When David heard about that, he gathered all the Israelite soldiers, and they crossed the Jordan River. They advanced and took their battle positions to attack the army of Aram.

But the army of Aram ran away from the soldiers of Israel. However, David’s soldiers killed seven thousand of their chariot drivers and forty thousand other soldiers. They also killed Shophak, their army commander.

When the kings who had been ruled by Hadadezer realized that they had been defeated by the Israelite army, they made peace with David, and agreed to allow him to rule them. So the rulers of Aram did not want to help the rulers of the Ammon people group anymore.

Die Ammoniter und Syrer werden besiegt

Es geschah aber, dass Naas, der König der Söhne Ammons, starb und sein Sohn König an seiner Statt ward.

Da sprach David: Ich will gegen Hanon, des Sohn des Naas, Teilnahme zeigen; denn sein Vater hat mir Liebe erwiesen. So sandte David denn Boten hin, ihm wegen des Todes seines Vaters Trost zuzusprechen. Als diese aber in das Land der Söhne Ammons kamen, um Hanon Trost zuzusprechen,

sagten die Fürsten der Söhne Ammons zu Hanon: Meinst du etwa, David habe deinem Vater zu Ehren solche gesandt, die dir Trost spenden sollen, und merkst du nicht, dass seine Diener zu dir gekommen sind, um dein Land zu erkunden und auszuspähen und zu erforschen?

Da ließ Hanon den Dienern Davids Haupt und Bart scheeren und ihnen die Kleider von den Lenden bis an die Füße abschneiden und entließ sie so.

Als sie nun fort gingen und David dies kund tun ließen, sandte er ihnen entgegen (denn man hatte ihnen eine große Schmach angetan) und befahl ihnen, in Jericho zu bleiben, bis ihnen der Bart gewachsen sei, alsdann sollten sie zurückkehren.

Da aber die Söhne Ammons sahen, dass sie David eine Unbill angetan hatten, sandten sowohl Hanon wie das übrige Volk tausend Talente Silbers, um von Mesopotamien und von den Syrern zu Maacha und von Soba Wagen und Reiter zu dingen.

Sie warben zweiunddreißigtausend Wagen und den König von Maacha mit seinem Kriegsvolke; diese kamen und lagerten sich vor Medaba. Auch die Söhne Ammons versammelten sich gleichfalls aus ihren Städten und zogen zum Kampfe aus.
8
Als David dies hörte, entsandte er Joab und das ganze Heer der streitbaren Männer.
9
Und die Söhne Ammons zogen aus und stellten sich in Schlachtordnung vor dem Tore der Stadt auf; während die Könige, die ihr zu Hilfe gekommen waren, abgesondert auf freiem Felde standen.

Als nun Joab sah, dass der Kampf sich von vorn und von hinten gegen ihn richtete, las er die Tapfersten von ganz Israel aus und trat den Syrern entgegen.
11
Den übrigen Teil der Mannschaft aber übergab er dem Befehle seines Bruders Abisai und sie rückten den Söhnen Ammons entgegen.
12
Da sprach er: Siegen die Syrer über mich, so komme mir zu Hilfe; siegen aber die Söhne Ammons über dich, so komme ich dir zu Hilfe.
13
Sei tapfer und lass uns mannhaft für unser Volk und für die Städte unsers Gottes einstehen; der Herr aber tue, was gut ist in seinen Augen!
14
So rückte Joab und das Volk, das bei ihm war, gegen die Syrer in den Kampf, und er schlug sie in die Flucht.
15
Als nun die Söhne Ammons sahen, dass die Syrer geflohen waren, flohen sie gleichfalls vor seinem Bruder Abisai und zogen sich in die Stadt zurück. Da kehrte auch Joab nach Jerusalem zurück.
16
Da aber die Syrer sahen, dass sie von Israel geschlagen waren, sandten sie Boten aus und ließen die Syrer herbeirufen, die jenseits des Stromes waren; Sophach, der Heerführer Adarezers, war ihr Anführer.
17
Als dies David gemeldet ward, sammelte er ganz Israel, ging über den Jordan, stieß auf sie und stellte sich ihnen in Schlachtordnung zum Streite entgegen und sie nahmen den Kampf gegen ihn auf.
18
Doch die Syrer flohen vor Israel und David vernichtete von den Syrern siebentausend Wagen und vierzigtausend Mann Fußvolk, auch Sophach, den Anführer des Heeres.
19
Als nun die Leute Adarezers sahen, dass sie von Israel geschlagen waren, gingen sie zu David über und unterwarfen sich; und fortan wollten die Syrer den Söhnen Ammons nicht mehr Hilfe leisten.
