- Kapitel 1 -

(1 Kings 22:51–53)

After King Ahab died, the country of Moab rebelled against Israel.

One day, Ahaziah, the new king of Israel, fell through the wooden slats in his upstairs room and was injured. So he sent for his messengers and commanded them, “Go and ask of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether or not I will recover from this injury.”

But the angel from Yahweh said to Elijah, the prophet from the city of Tishbe, “The king of Samaria is sending some messengers to Ekron. Go and meet them and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you wish to ask Baal-Zebub whether you will recover?’
4
Yahweh says that you should tell King Ahaziah that he will not recover from his being injured; he will surely die.”

So Elijah went to meet the messengers and told that to them, and they returned to the king instead of going to Ekron. The king asked them, “Why have you come back so quickly?”

They replied, “A man came to meet us and said to us, ‘Go back to the king who sent you and tell him that Yahweh says, “‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you wish to ask Baal-Zebub whether you will recover’? Go tell the king that he will not recover from being injured; instead, he will surely die.”’”

The king said to them, “The man who came to meet you and told that to you, what did he look like?”
8
They replied, “He was wearing a cloak made from camel hair and had a wide leather belt around his waist.” The king exclaimed, “That must be Elijah!”

Then the king sent an officer with fifty soldiers to seize Elijah. They found Elijah sitting on the top of a hill. The officer called out to him, “Prophet, the king commands that you come down here!”

But Elijah replied to the officer, “I am a prophet, so I command that fire come down from the sky and burn up you and your fifty soldiers!” Immediately, fire came down from the sky and completely burned up the officer and his fifty soldiers.

When the king found out about that, he sent another officer with fifty more soldiers. They went to where Elijah was, and the officer called out to him, “Prophet, the king commands that you come down immediately!”
12
But Elijah replied, “I am a prophet, so I command that fire come down from the sky and kill you and your soldiers!” Then a fire from God came down from the sky and killed that officer and his soldiers.

When the king heard about that, he sent still another officer with fifty more soldiers. They went to where Elijah was; the officer prostrated himself in front of Elijah and said to him, “Prophet, I plead with you, be kind to me and my fifty soldiers, and do not kill us!

We know that two times fire came down from the sky and killed officers and the soldiers with them. So now, please be kind to me!”
15
Then the angel from Yahweh said to Elijah, “Go down and go with him. Do not be afraid of him.” So Elijah went with them to the king.
16
When Elijah arrived, he said to the king, “This is what Yahweh says: ‘You sent messengers to go to Ekron to ask Baal-Zebub, their god, whether you would recover. You acted as though there is no God in Israel to consult. So you will not recover from being injured; instead, you are going to die!’”

Jehoram Succeeds Ahaziah

So Ahaziah died, which is what Yahweh told Elijah would happen. Ahaziah’s younger brother Joram became the new king, at the same time that Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat, had been ruling Judah for almost two years. Ahaziah’s brother became the king because Ahaziah had no son to become the king.

Gott verurteilt Ahasja

(1. Könige 22,51-53)

Moab aber lehnte sich auf wider Israel, nachdem Achab gestorben war.
2
Und Ochozias fiel durch das Gitter seines Obergemaches in Samaria und ward krank. Da sandte er Boten und sprach zu ihnen: Gehet hin und befraget Beelzebub, den Gott von Akkaron, ob ich aus dieser Krankheit mit dem Leben davonkommen kann.

Der Engel des Herrn aber redete zu Elias, dem Thesbiter, und sprach: Mache dich auf und gehe den Boten des Königs von Samaria entgegen und sprich zu ihnen: Ist denn kein Gott in Israel, dass ihr hingehet, den Beelzebub, den Gott des Akkarons zu befragen?

Darum spricht der Herr also: Von dem Lager, das du bestiegen hast, wirst du nicht herabsteigen, sondern des Todes sterben! Und Elias ging von dannen.

Da kehrten die Boten wieder zu Ochozias zurück und dieser sprach zu ihnen: Warum seid ihr zurückgekehrt?

Sie antworteten ihm: Ein Mann begegnete uns und sprach zu uns: Gehet und kehret zurück zu dem Könige, der euch gesandt hat, und saget zu ihm: So spricht der Herr: Hast du etwa, weil kein Gott in Israel war, hingesendet, Beelzebub, den Gott Akkarons, zu befragen? Darum sollst du von dem Lager, das du bestiegen hast, nicht herabsteigen, sondern des Todes sterben!

Da sprach er zu ihnen: Welches war die Gestalt und die Kleidung des Mannes, der euch begegnete und diese Worte redete?

Sie antworteten: Es war ein haariger Mann und an den Lenden mit einem ledernen Riemen umgürtet. Da sprach er: Das ist Elias, der Thesbiter!

Hierauf sandte er einen Hauptmann über fünfzig zu ihm und die fünfzig, welche diesem untergeben waren. Dieser stieg zu ihm hinan und sprach zu ihm, der auf der Höhe des Berges saß: Mann Gottes! der König befiehlt dir herabzukommen.

Elias antwortete und sprach zu dem Hauptmann über fünfzig: Wenn ich ein Mann Gottes bin, so falle Feuer vom Himmel herab und verzehre dich und deine fünfzig! Da fiel Feuer vom Himmel und verzehrte ihn und die fünfzig, welche bei ihm waren.

Hierauf sandte er wiederum einen andern Hauptmann über fünfzig und die fünfzig mit ihm aus. Dieser sprach zu ihm: Mann Gottes! so spricht der König: Komme eilends herab!
12
Elias antwortete und sprach: Bin ich ein Mann Gottes, so falle Feuer vom Himmel und verzehre dich und deine fünfzig! Alsbald fiel Feuer vom Himmel und verzehrte ihn und seine fünfzig.
13
Nun sandte der König nochmals einen dritten Hauptmann über fünfzig und die fünfzig, welche unter ihm standen. Als dieser ankam, beugte er die Kniee vor Elias, flehte ihn an und sprach: Mann Gottes! lass doch meine Seele und die Seelen deiner Diener, die bei mir sind, nicht verächtlich vor dir sein!

Siehe, es ist Feuer vom Himmel gefallen und hat die zwei ersten Hauptleute über fünfzig verzehrt samt den fünfzigen, welche bei ihnen waren; nun aber bitte ich, erbarme dich meiner Seele.

Da redete der Engel des Herrn zu Elias und sprach: Gehe mit ihm hinab, fürchte dich nicht! Er stand also auf und ging mit ihm hinab zu dem Könige

und sprach zu diesem: So spricht der Herr: Weil du Boten gesandt hast, um Beelzebub, den Gott Akkarons, zu befragen, als ob kein Gott in Israel wäre, dessen Ausspruch du einholen könntest, deshalb wirst du von dem Lager, das du bestiegen, nicht herabsteigen, sondern wirst des Todes sterben!

So starb er nach dem Worte des Herrn, welches Elias gesprochen, und sein Bruder Joram ward König, an seiner Statt, im zweiten Jahre Jorams, des Sohnes Josaphats, des Königs von Juda, denn er hatte keinen Sohn.

Was aber sonst von Ochozias zu sagen ist, was er getan hat, ist das nicht in den Jahrbüchern der Könige von Israel beschrieben?
