- Kapitel 9 -

(Nehemiah 13:23–31)

“Some time later, the Jewish leaders came to me and said, ’Many Israelites, and even some priests and other men who are descendants of Levi who work in the temple, have not kept themselves from doing what the other people who are living in this land do. They are doing the same disgusting things that are being done by the Canaan, Heth, Periz, Jebus, Ammon, and Amor people groups, and by the people from Moab and Egypt,

Specifically, some Israelite men have married women who are not Israelites, and they have allowed their sons to do the same thing. So we, God’s sacred people, have become polluted. And some of our leaders and officials have been the first ones to betray God in this way!’

When I heard that, I was overwhelmed, so I tore my clothes and tore some hair from my head and from my beard. Then I sat down, ashamed of my people since the Israelites knew that God had warned us that he would punish us if we disobeyed what he had said to us about marrying women who are not Israelites.

So many of them trembled when they heard that some of those who had returned from Babylonia had sinned like that. They came and sat with me until it was time to offer the evening sacrifices of grain.

Ezra’s Prayer of Confession

When it was time to offer those sacrifices, I was still sitting there, wearing those torn clothes and mourning. I stood up, and then I quickly prostrated myself on the ground. I lifted up my hands to Yahweh, my God,

and this is what I prayed: ’Yahweh my God, I am very ashamed to raise my head in front of you. The sins that we Israelites have committed are very great; it is as though they have risen up higher than our heads. As for our guilt for committing those sins, it is as though it rises up to the heavens.

Since the time that our ancestors lived until now, we have been very guilty. That is the reason that we and our kings and our priests have been defeated by the armies of the kings of other lands. They killed some of our people, they captured some, they robbed some, and they caused them all to be disgraced, just as we are today.

But now, Yahweh God, you have acted very kindly toward us. You have allowed some of us to survive. You have revived our spirits and allowed us to escape from being slaves in Babylonia and to return safely to live in this sacred place.

We were slaves, but you did not abandon us. Instead, because you are always faithful to your covenant with us, you caused the kings of Persia to act very kindly toward us. You have allowed us to continue to live and to rebuild your temple which had been completely destroyed. You have allowed us to start to live safely here in Jerusalem and in other towns in Judah.

Our God, what more can we say now? In spite of all that you have done for us, we have disobeyed your commands.

They are commands that you gave to your servants, the prophets, to tell to us. They told us that the land that we would occupy was polluted because of the detestable things that were done by the people who lived there. They said that the land was filled from one end to the other with people who did immoral things.

They said that we should not allow our daughters to marry their sons! We should not allow our sons to marry their daughters! We should not even try to cause things to go well for those people! They said that if we obeyed these instructions, our nation would be strong, and we would enjoy the good crops that grow on the land, and the land would belong to our descendants forever.

But you punished us because we were very guilty for having done wicked things. Still, you have not punished us as much as we deserve to be punished. I say this because you, our God, have allowed some of us to survive.

However, some of us are again disobeying your commands, and we are marrying women who do those detestable things. If we continue to do that, surely you will get rid of all of us, with the result that none of us will remain alive.

Yahweh, God of Israel, you always do the right thing! We are guilty. We are only a few people who have escaped from Babylonia, but we are praying to you, even though we do not deserve to be in your presence.””’

Eheschließung mit Heiden

(Nehemia 13,23-31)

Nachdem dies vollbracht war, traten die Vorsteher zu mir und sprachen: Das Volk Israel und die Priester und die Leviten sind nicht von den Völkern der Lande und ihren Greueln abgesondert, nämlich von den Chananitern, Hethitern, Pherezitern, Jebusitern, Ammonitern, Moabitern, Ägyptern und Ammorhitern;

denn sie haben einige von deren Töchtern für sich und ihre Söhne genommen und so den heiligen Samen mit den Völkern der Länder vermischt, auch haben die Vorsteher und Obrigkeiten zuerst sich dieser Übertretung schuldig gemacht.

Als ich diesen Vorwurf hörte, zerriss ich meinen Mantel und mein Obergewand und raufte mir die Haare des Hauptes und Bartes aus und setzte mich in Trauer nieder.

Alle aber, welche das Wort des Gottes Israels fürchteten, kamen zu mir wegen der Übertretung derjenigen, die aus der Gefangenschaft gekommen waren, und ich saß traurig da bis zum Abendopfer.

Zur Zeit des Abendopfers aber stand ich aus meiner Trauer auf, zerriss noch einmal Mantel und Kleid, beugte meine Knie, breitete zum Herrn, meinem Gott, meine Hände aus

und sprach: Mein Gott! Scham erfasst mich und ich erröte, mein Angesicht zu dir zu erheben; denn unsere Missetaten haben sich über unser Haupt gehäuft und unsere Sünden sind bis an den Himmel emporgewachsen

von den Tagen unserer Väter an, aber auch wir selbst haben schwer gesündigt bis auf diesen Tag und um unserer Sünden willen sind wir selbst und unsere Könige und unsere Priester in die Hand der Könige der Länder gegeben worden, in das Schwert, in Gefangenschaft, in Plünderung und in Beschämung, wie noch heute.

Und jetzt ist gleichsam auf einen kleinen Augenblick unser Flehen zu dem Herrn, unserm Gott, gekommen, dass einige übriggelassen sind und uns ein Pfahl an seiner heiligen Stätte gegeben ward, und dass unser Gott unsere Augen erleuchtete und uns noch ein wenig Leben verlieh in unserer Knechtschaft.

Denn wir sind Knechte, aber unser Gott hat uns nicht in unserer Knechtschaft verlassen, sondern hat uns Gnade vor dem Könige von Persien zugewendet, dass er uns das Leben schenkte und das Haus unseres Gottes wieder aufrichtete und aus seiner Verwüstung erhob und uns eine Mauer schaffte in Juda und Jerusalem.

Und nun, was sollen wir nach diesem allem sagen, unser Gott? Wir haben ja deine Gebote verlassen,

die du durch deine Diener, die Propheten, gegeben hast, da du sprachst: Das Land, in das ihr hinziehet, es in Besitz zu nehmen, ist ein unreines Land, sowie die Völker und die übrigen Länder unrein sind durch die Greuel derjenigen, welche es von einem Ende zum andern mit ihrer Verunreinigung erfüllt haben.

Gebet daher eure Töchter nicht ihren Söhnen und ihre Töchter nehmet nicht für eure Söhne, und nimmermehr suchet Frieden für sie und Glück; damit ihr stark werdet und genießet, was gut ist im Lande, und eure Kinder auf ewig zu Erben lasset.

Und nach allem, was über uns durch unsere schlimmen Taten und durch unsere großen Vergehen gekommen ist, hast du, unser Gott, uns von unserer Ungerechtigkeit befreit und uns Rettung gewährt, wie es heute erscheint,

damit wir uns nicht abwenden und deine Gebote übertreten, noch Heiraten mit den Völkern dieser Greuel eingehen. Wirst du denn über uns zürnen bis zur Vernichtung, dass du uns die Übriggebliebenen nicht zur Rettung lassest?

Herr, Gott Israels! du bist gerecht; denn wir sind übriggeblieben, um gerettet zu werden, wie es sich heute zeigt. Siehe, wir stehen vor dir mit unserer Schuld; denn niemand kann deswegen vor dir bestehen.
