- Kapitel 40 -

Then Yahweh said to Job,

“Do you still want to argue with me, God One? Since you criticize me, you should be able to answer my questions!”

Job's answer to God

Then Job replied to Yahweh,

“Now I realize that I am completely worthless. So how could I answer those questions? I will put my hand over my mouth and not say anything.

I have already said more than I should have said, so now I will say nothing more.”

God's challenge to Job

Then Yahweh again spoke to Job from inside a powerful storm. He said,

“I want to ask you some questions, so act like a man and get ready to answer my questions.

Are you going to accuse me and say that I am unjust? Are you going to say that what I have done is wrong, in order that you can say that what you have done is right?
9
Do you have the same amount of power as I do? Can your voice sound as loud as thunder, as mine can?
10
If you can do that, then put on the robes that show that you are glorious and are greatly honored!
11
Show that you are very angry; show that you have the right to humble people who are very proud!
12
Humble those proud people just by looking at them angrily! Crush wicked people quickly!
13
Bury them in the ground! Send them to the place where dead people are, where they will not be able to get out!
14
If you do that, I will congratulate you and say that truly you can save yourself by your own ability.
15
Think also about hippopotamuses. I made you, and I made them also. They eat grass, like oxen do.
16
Their legs are very strong, and the muscles of their bellies are very powerful.
17
Their tails are stiff like the branches of a cedar tree. The muscles of their thighs are close together.
18
Their thigh bones are like tubes made of bronze, and the bones of their legs are like bars made of iron.
19
Hippopotamuses are among the strongest of the animals that I made, and I, who created them, am the only one who can kill them.
20
On the hills grows food for them to eat while many other wild animals play nearby.
21
They lie down in the water under the lotus plants; they hide in tall reeds in the swamps.
22
The hippopotamuses find shade under the lotus plants, and they are surrounded by willow trees growing in the streams.
23
They are not disturbed by raging, flooding rivers; they are not even disturbed when rivers like the Jordan River rush over them.
24
No one can catch them with hooks or by piercing their noses with the teeth of a trap!

Gürte als ein Mann deine Lenden, ich will dich fragen, und du sage mir an!

Hiobs Antwort an Gott

Wirst du mein Gericht zunichte machen und mich verdammen, damit du Recht behaltest?

Hast du denn einen Arm wie Gott und donnerst du mit gleichem Schalle?

Umkleide dich mit Schmuck, erhebe dich hoch, sei herrlich und lege schöne Gewänder an!

Gottes Herausforderung an Hiob

Zerstreue die Stolzen in deinem Grimme und demütige alle Hoffärtigen mit einem Blicke!

Blick alle Stolzen an und mache sie zuschanden und zermalme die Gottlosen an ihrer Stätte!

Birg sie im Staube allzumal, und versenke ihr Angesicht in die Grube.
9
Alsdann will ich bekennen, dass deine Rechte dich zu retten vermag.

Siehe, der Behemoth, den ich gemacht wie dich, frißt Gras wie ein Rind.

Seine Kraft ist in seinen Lenden und seine Stärke in den Sehnen seines Leibes.

Er streckt seinen Schwanz gleich der Zeder aus, die Nerven seiner Weichen sind verschlungen.
13
Seine Knochen sind wie Röhren von Erz, sein Knorpelwerk wie Eisenstäbe.
14
Er ist der Erstling der Wege Gottes; der ihn gemacht hat, passt ihm sein Schwert an.
15
Ihm tragen die Berge Futter, alle Tiere des Feldes spielen daselbst.
16
Im Schatten schläft er im Rohrversteck und an sumpfigen Orten.
17
Schattige Plätze bieten ihm Schatten, des Stromes Weiden umgeben ihn.

Siehe, er schlürft einen Fluß und staunt nicht und bleibt ruhig, wenn ein Jordan in seinen Mund flutet.

Vor seinen Augen fängt man ihn wie mit der Angel und mit Sprenkeln durchbohrt man seine Nase.

Kannst du den Leviathan mit der Angel herausziehen und mit dem Stricke seine Zunge binden?
21
Kannst du einen Ring in seine Nase legen oder mit einem Haken seine Backen durchbohren?
22
Wird er an dich viele Bitten richten oder dir sanfte Worte geben?
23
Wird er einen Bund mit dir schließen, dass du ihn für immer zum Knechte nehmest?
24
Wirst du mit ihm spielen wie mit einem Vogel oder ihn anbinden für deine Mädchen?
25
Werden Freunde ihn zerschneiden, Kaufleute ihn verteilen?
26
Kannst du das Netz mit seiner Haut füllen und den Fischbehälter mit seinem Kopfe?

Lege deine Hand an ihn! Denke aber an den Kampf, du wirst ihn nicht wieder herausfordern.
28
Siehe, seine Hoffnung täuscht ihn und vor aller Augen liegt er hingestreckt.
