- Kapitel 23 -

(2 Kings 11:4–12)

Then in the seventh year, Jehoiada having been strengthened, he took the centurions, namely, Azariah, the son of Jeroham, and Ishmael, the son of Jehohanan, and also Azariah, the son of Obed, and Maaseiah, the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat, the son of Zichri, and he formed a pact with them.

And traveling through Judah, they gathered together the Levites from all of the cities of Judah, and the leaders of the families of Israel, and they went to Jerusalem.

Then the entire multitude formed a pact with the king, in the house of God. And Jehoiada said to them: “Behold, the son of the king shall reign, just as the Lord has said concerning the sons of David.

Therefore, this is the word that you shall do:

One third part of you who arrive on the Sabbath, priests, and Levites, and porters, shall be at the gates. Truly, one third part shall be at the house of the king. And one third shall be at the gate which is called the Foundation. Yet truly, let all the remainder of the common people be in the courts of the house of the Lord.(a)

Let no one else enter into the house of the Lord, except the priests, and those from the Levites who are ministering. These alone may enter, for they have been sanctified. And let all the remainder of the common people observe the watches of the Lord.

Then let the Levites encircle the king, each one having his weapons. And if anyone else will have entered into the temple, let him be slain. And may they be with the king, both entering and departing.”

Then the Levites, and all of Judah, acted in accord with all that the high priest Jehoiada had instructed. And each of them took the men who were under him, and who were arriving by the course of the Sabbath, with those who had fulfilled the Sabbath and who were about to depart. For indeed the high priest Jehoiada had not permitted the companies to depart, which were accustomed to replace one another each week.

And Jehoiada, the priest, gave to the centurions the lances and round shields and crescent shields of king David, which he had dedicated in the house of the Lord.

And he positioned all the people, holding short swords, from the right part of the temple to the left part of the temple, before the altar and the temple, all around the king.

And they led out the son of the king. And they imposed the diadem on him, and the testimony. And they gave him the law to hold in his hand. And they appointed him as king. Also, the high priest Jehoiada and his sons anointed him. And they prayed for him, and said, “May the king live!”

The Death of Athaliah

(2 Kings 11:13–16)

And when Athaliah had heard it, specifically the sound of running and the praising of the king, she entered to the people in the temple of the Lord.

And when she had seen the king standing upon the step at the entrance, and the leaders and companies around him, and all the people of the land rejoicing, and sounding the trumpets, and playing on instruments of various kinds, and the voice of those who were praising, she tore her garments, and she said: “Treason! Treason!”

Then the high priest Jehoiada, going out to the centurions and to the leaders of the army, said to them: “Lead her away, beyond the borders of the temple. And let her be put to death outside, with the sword.” And the priest instructed that she should not be killed in the house of the Lord.

And they laid hands on her neck. And when she had entered the gate for the horses at the king’s house, they put her to death there.

Jehoiada Restores the Worship of the LORD

(2 Kings 11:17–21)

Then Jehoiada formed a covenant between himself and the entire people, and the king, so that they would be the people of the Lord.

And so, all the people entered into the house of Baal, and they destroyed it. And they broke apart his altars and idols. Also, they put to death Mattan, the priest of Baal, before the altars.

Then Jehoiada appointed overseers in the house of the Lord, under the hands of the priests and Levites, whom David had distributed to the house of the Lord so that they might offer holocausts to the Lord, just as it was written in the law of Moses, with gladness and singing, in accord with the disposition of David.

Also, he appointed porters at the gates of the house of the Lord, so that whoever was unclean for any reason would not enter.

And he took the centurions, and the most valiant men, and the leaders of the people, and all the common people of the land, and they set out to descend to the king, from the house of the Lord, and to enter through the middle of the upper gate, to the house of the king. And they placed him on the royal throne.

And all the people of the land were rejoicing, and the city was quieted. But Athaliah was slain with the sword.

Joas wird zum König von Juda gekrönt

(2. Könige 11,4-12)

Im siebten Jahre aber ermannte sich Jojada und berief die Hauptleute, Azarias nämlich, den Sohn Jerohams, Ismahel, den Sohn Johanans, Azarias, den Sohn Obeds, Maasias, den Sohn Adajas, und Elisaphat, den Sohn Zechris, und schloss mit ihnen einen Bund.

Diese durchzogen Juda und versammelten die Leviten aus allen Städten Judas und die Häupter der Geschlechter Israels, und sie kamen nach Jerusalem.

Da schloss die ganze Gemeinde im Hause Gottes einen Bund mit dem Könige, und Jojada sprach zu ihnen: Sehet, des Königs Sohn soll König sein, wie der Herr von den Söhnen Davids verheißen hat.

Dies ist also der Plan, den ihr ausführen sollt:

Ein Drittel von euch, die, welche am Sabbat antreten, Priester, Leviten und Türhüter, mögen an den Toren bleiben, ein Drittel am Hause des Königs und ein Drittel am Tore, welches Grundtor heißt; alles übrige Volk aber sei in dem Vorhofe des Hauses des Herrn.

Und niemand anders trete in das Haus des Herrn, als die Priester, und die von den Leviten, welche Dienst tun; nur diese allein mögen eintreten, denn sie sind geheiligt; das ganze übrige Volk halte die Wache des Herrn.

Die Leviten aber sollen den König umgeben, ein jeder habe seine Waffe zur Hand, (jeder andere aber, der in den Tempel eintritt, werde getötet), und sie seien bei dem Könige, wenn er aus- und eingeht.

Die Leviten und ganz Juda taten also allem gemäß, was der Hohepriester Jojada geboten hatte, und nahmen, ein jeder, die Leute, welche unter ihnen standen, und kamen nach der Ordnung des Sabbats mit denen, welche den Sabbat vollendet hatten und abziehen sollten; denn der Hohepriester Jojada hatte die Abteilungen nicht abziehen lassen, welche sich wöchentlich abzulösen pflegten.

Auch gab der Priester Jojada den Hauptleuten Speere und Schilde, sowie die Schilde des Königs David, welche dieser im Hause des Herrn als Weihegeschenk niedergelegt hatte.

Hierauf stellte er alles Volk, das Schwerter trug, von der rechten Seite des Tempels bis zur linken Seite desselben, vor dem Altar und dem Tempel, rings um den König auf.

Nunmehr führten sie den Königssohn heraus und setzten ihm die Krone auf und das Zeugnis und gaben ihm das Gesetz in die Hand und machten ihn zum Könige, und der Hohepriester Jojada und seine Söhne salbten ihn und wünschten ihm Glück und riefen: Es lebe der König!

Tod von Athalja

(2. Könige 11,13-16)

Als Athalia das Rufen derer hörte, die hinzuliefen und den König priesen, kam sie zu dem Volke in den Tempel des Herrn.

Da sah sie den König auf der Stufe am Eingange stehen und die Obersten und die Scharen um ihn her und das ganze Volk des Landes sich freuend und in die Trompete stoßend und auf allerlei Instrumenten spielend, und hörte das Rufen der Jubelnden und zerriss ihre Kleider und rief: Verräterei, Verräterei!

Der Hohepriester Jojada aber ging zu den Hauptleuten und den Führern des Heeres hinaus und sprach zu ihnen: Führet sie hinaus vor die Schranken des Tempels und draußen töte man sie mit dem Schwerte! Und der Priester befahl, sie nicht im Hause des Herrn zu töten.

Da legten sie ihr die Hand auf den Nacken, und als sie durch das Roßtor zu dem Königshause gekommen war, tötete man sie daselbst.

(2. Könige 11,17-21)

Jojada aber schloss einen Bund zwischen sich und dem ganzen Volke und dem Könige, dass sie das Volk des Herrn sein sollten.

Da drang das ganze Volk in das Haus des Baal und sie zerstörten es und zerbrachen seine Altäre und Bildsäulen und töteten Mathan, den Priester Baals, vor den Altären.

Hierauf bestellte Jojada Vorsteher im Hause des Herrn unter der Leitung der Priester und der Leviten, welche David für das Haus des Herrn eingeteilt hatte, damit sie dem Herrn, wie im Gesetz Moses geschrieben ist, Brandopfer darbrachten, mit Freuden und mit Gesängen, nach der Anordnung Davids.

Auch bestellte er Türhüter an den Toren des Hauses des Herrn, damit niemand einträte, der irgendwie unrein wäre.

Ferner nahm er die Hauptleute und die tapfersten Männer und die Fürsten des Volkes, sowie das ganze Volk des Landes, zu sich und sie brachten den König aus dem Hause des Herrn herab und führten ihn mitten durch das obere Tor in das Haus des Königs und setzten ihn auf den Königsthron.

Da freute sich das ganze Volk des Landes und die Stadt blieb ruhig, Athalia aber ward mit dem Schwerte getötet.
