- Kapitel 30 -

Also, Hezekiah sent to all of Israel and Judah. And he wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, so that they would come to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, and so that they would keep the Passover to the Lord, the God of Israel.

Therefore, having taken counsel, the king and the rulers, and the entire assembly of Jerusalem, resolved that they would keep the Passover, in the second month.(a)

For they had not been able to keep it at its proper time. For the priests, who were unable to suffice, had not been sanctified. And the people had not yet been gathered together in Jerusalem.(c)

And the word was pleasing to the king, and to the entire multitude.

And they resolved that they would send messengers to all of Israel, from Beersheba even to Dan, so that they might come and keep the Passover to the Lord, the God of Israel, at Jerusalem. For many had not kept it, just as it was prescribed by the law.

And carriers traveled with the letters, by order of the king and his rulers, to all of Israel and Judah, proclaiming, in accord with what the king had ordered: “O sons of Israel, return to the Lord, the God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel. And he will return to the remnant who escaped from the hand of the king of the Assyrians.

Do not choose to be like your fathers and brothers, who withdrew from the Lord, the God of their fathers. And so he delivered them over to destruction, as you yourselves discern.

Do not choose to harden your necks, as your fathers did. Surrender to the hands of the Lord. And go to his Sanctuary, which he has sanctified unto eternity. Serve the Lord, the God of your fathers, and the fury of his wrath will be turned away from you.

For if you will return to the Lord, your brothers and sons will find mercy before their masters, who led them away as captives, and they will be returned to this land. For the Lord your God is compassionate and lenient, and he will not avert his face from you, if you will return to him.”

And so, the carriers were traveling quickly from city to city, throughout the land of Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun, though they were ridiculing and mocking them.

Even so, certain men from Asher, and from Manasseh, and from Zebulun, acquiescing to this counsel, went to Jerusalem.

Truly, the hand of God was working in Judah, to give them one heart, so that they would accomplish the word of the Lord, according to the precept of the king and of the rulers.

Hezekiah Celebrates the Passover

And many people gathered together in Jerusalem, so that they could keep the solemnity of unleavened bread, in the second month.

And rising up, they destroyed the altars which were in Jerusalem, and all the things in which incense was burned to idols. Overturning these things, they cast them into the torrent Kidron.

Then they immolated the Passover on the fourteenth day of the second month. Also, the priests and Levites, at length having been sanctified, offered the holocausts in the house of the Lord.

And they stood in their order, according to the disposition and law of Moses, the man of God. Yet truly, the priests took up the blood, which was to be poured out, from the hands of the Levites,

because a great number were not sanctified. And therefore, the Levites immolated the Passover for those who had not been sanctified to the Lord in time.

And now a great portion of the people from Ephraim, and Manasseh, and Issachar, and Zebulun, who had not been sanctified, ate the Passover, which is not in accord with what was written. And Hezekiah prayed for them, saying: “The good Lord will be forgiving(d)

to all who, with their whole heart, seek the Lord, the God of their fathers. And he will not impute it to them, though they have not been sanctified.”

And the Lord heeded him, and was reconciled to the people.

And the sons of Israel who were found at Jerusalem kept the solemnity of unleavened bread for seven days with great rejoicing, praising the Lord throughout each day, with the Levites and the priests, accompanied by the musical instruments corresponding to their office.

And Hezekiah spoke to the heart of all the Levites, who had a good understanding concerning the Lord. And they ate during the seven days of the solemnity, immolating victims of peace offerings, and praising the Lord, the God of their fathers.

And it pleased the entire multitude that they should celebrate, even for another seven days. And they did this with enormous gladness.

For Hezekiah, the king of Judah, had offered to the multitude one thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep. Truly, the rulers had given the people one thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep. Then a great multitude of priests was sanctified.

And the whole multitude of Judah, as much the priests and Levites as the entire crowd that had arrived from Israel, and also the converts from the land of Israel, and those with a habitation in Judah, was overflowing with cheerfulness.

And there was a great celebration in Jerusalem, to such an extent as had not been in that city since the days of Solomon, the son of David, the king of Israel.

Then the priests and Levites rose up and blessed the people. And their voice was heeded. And their prayer reached the holy habitation of heaven.

(a)30:2 The time for keeping the Passover is a matter of discipline, not doctrine, and such matters of discipline are changeable and dispensable. So they were able, for a grave reason, to celebrate the Passover in the second month, rather than the first, and to do so without sin.(Conte)

Hiskia hält das Passahfest

Hierauf sandte Ezechias an ganz Israel und Juda und schrieb Briefe an Ephraim und Manasse, sie sollten zum Hause des Herrn nach Jerusalem kommen, um dem Herrn, dem Gott Israels, das Phase zu feiern.

Nachdem nämlich der König mit den Fürsten und der ganzen Gemeinde Jerusalems Rat gehalten, beschlossen sie, das Phase im zweiten Monat zu halten.

Denn sie hatten es nicht zu seiner Zeit feiern können, weil die Priester, die hätten hinreichen können, nicht geheiligt waren und das Volk sich noch nicht in Jerusalem versammelt hatte.

Dieser Vorschlag gefiel dem Könige und der ganzen Gemeinde.

Sie beschlossen also, Boten durch ganz Israel zu senden, von Bersabee bis Dan, dass sie kommen und dem Herrn, dem Gott Israels, zu Jerusalem Phase halten sollten; denn viele hatten es nicht gehalten, wie es im Gesetze vorgeschrieben ist.

Da durcheilten die Läufer mit Briefen auf des Königs und seiner Fürsten Befehl ganz Israel und Juda und riefen aus, wie der König geboten hatte: Söhne Israels! kehret zu dem Herrn, dem Gott Abrahams, Isaaks und Israels zurück, so wird er sich auch wieder zu den Übriggebliebenen wenden, die der Hand des Königs von Assyrien entronnen sind.

Werdet nicht wie eure Väter und Brüder, welche von dem Herrn, dem Gott ihrer Väter, abfielen und die er dem Untergange preisgab, wie ihr selbst seht.

Seid nicht halsstarrig, wie eure Väter: bietet dem Herrn die Hand und kommet zu seinem Heiligtume, das er auf immerdar geheiligt hat; dienet dem Herrn, dem Gott eurer Väter, so wird sein grimmiger Zorn sich von euch wenden.

Denn wenn ihr zu dem Herrn zurückkehrt, so werden eure Brüder und Söhne bei ihren Herren, die sie gefangen weggeführt haben, Erbarmen finden und werden in dieses Land zurückkehren; denn der Herr, euer Gott, ist gnädig und barmherzig und wird sein Angesicht nicht von euch abwenden, wenn ihr zu ihm zurückkehrt.

Da gingen die Läufer eilig von Stadt zu Stadt durch das Land Ephraim und Manasse bis nach Zabulon hin, doch jene lachten über sie und spotteten ihrer.

Einige Männer indes aus Aser und Manasse und Zabulon folgten der Aufforderung und kamen nach Jerusalem.

Aber in Juda wirkte die Hand des Herrn, dass er ihnen Einmütigkeit verlieh, so dass sie nach dem Gebote des Königs und der Fürsten das Wort des Herrn erfüllten.

Und es versammelte sich in Jerusalem viel Volk, um das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote im zweiten Monate zu feiern.

Diese machten sich auf, rissen die Altäre in Jerusalem nieder und zerstörten alle Altäre, auf denen man den Götzen Räucherwerk anzündete, und warfen sie in den Bach Kedron.

Sodann schlachteten sie das Phase am vierzehnten Tage des zweiten Monats, und die Priester und Leviten heiligten sich endlich und brachten Brandopfer im Hause des Herrn dar.

Und sie standen nach ihrer Ordnung der Vorschrift und dem Gesetze Moses, des Mannes Gottes, gemäß; die Priester aber empfingen das Blut aus der Hand der Leviten, um es auszugießen,

denn zahlreich war das Volk, das sich noch nicht geheiligt hatte; darum schlachteten die Leviten das Phase für die, welche nicht geheiligt zu dem Herrn gekommen waren.

Auch ein großer Teil des Volkes aus Ephraim und Manasse und Issachar und Zabulon hatte sich nicht geheiligt und aß das Phase nicht so, wie es vorgeschrieben ist; aber Ezechias betete für sie, indem er sprach: Der Herr, der gütig ist, wird Vergebung gewähren

allen, die von ganzem Herzen den Herrn, den Gott ihrer Väter, suchen, und wird ihnen nicht zurechnen, dass sie sich nicht genug geheiligt haben.

Und der Herr erhörte ihn und ward mit dem Volke versöhnt.

So hielten die Söhne Israels, die sich in Jerusalem einfanden, das Fest der ungesäuerten Brote sieben Tage lang mit großer Freude und priesen den Herrn Tag für Tag; auch die Leviten und Priester auf den Saitenspielen, welche zu ihrem Amte gehörten.

Und Ezechias redete zum Herzen aller Leviten, welche gute Gesinnung für den Herrn hatten; diese aßen die sieben Tage des Festes hindurch und schlachteten die Friedopfer und priesen den Herrn, den Gott ihrer Väter.

Und es gefiel der ganzen Versammlung, noch weitere sieben Tage zu feiern, und sie taten es mit großer Freude.

Denn Ezechias, der König von Juda, hatte dem Volke tausend Stiere und siebentausend Schafe geschenkt, die Fürsten aber hatten dem Volke tausend Stiere und zehntausend Schafe gegeben; es heiligten sich also eine große Anzahl von Priestern.

Und Freude erfüllte die ganze Gemeinde von Juda, sowohl die Priester und die Leviten, als die ganze Schar derer, die aus Israel gekommen waren; desgleichen die Fremdlinge, die aus dem Lande Israel kamen oder in Juda wohnten.

Es war ein großes Fest in Jerusalem, wie ein solches seit den Tagen Salomons, des Sohnes Davids, des Königs von Israel, in dieser Stadt nicht gewesen war.

Und die Priester und Leviten erhoben sich und segneten das Volk, und ihre Stimme ward erhört und das Gebet drang zu der heiligen Wohnung gen Himmel.
