- Kapitel 3 -

Woe to the city of blood, filled with all manner of lies and violence. Crime shall not depart from you:

the voice of the whip, and the voice of the turning wheels, and of the neighing horse, and the burning chariot, and the horsemen who ride,

and of the flashing sword and the shining spear, and of a multitude executed and a grievous ruination. Neither is there an end to the dead bodies, and they will fall down upon their dead bodies.

Because of the multitude of fornications of the kept woman, beautiful and pleasing and practicing evil deeds, who sold nations by her fornications, and families by her evil doing:(a)

behold, I will come to you, says the Lord of hosts, and I will reveal your shame to your face, and I will show your nakedness to the Gentiles, and your disgrace to kingdoms.(b)

And I will cast abominations over you, and I will afflict you with abuse, and I will make an example of you.

And this shall be: everyone who sees you, will recoil from you, and he will say: “Nineveh has been devastated.” Who will shake his head over you? Where might I seek consolation for you?

Are you better than the populous Alexandria, which dwells along the rivers? Waters encircle it: the sea, with its riches. The waters are its walls.(c)

Ethiopia and Egypt were its strength, and there is no limit. Africa and Northern Africa have been your helpers.(d)

Nevertheless, she has been led away with the transmigration into captivity. Her little ones have been dashed in pieces at the top of every street, and they have cast lots over her celebrities, and all her elite have been fastened together in shackles.

Therefore, you also will become inebriated, and you will be despised, and you will seek help from the opposition.

All your fortresses will be like fig trees with their green figs. If they are shaken violently, they will fall into the mouth of the one who devours.

Behold, women are at the center of your people. The gates of your land will be opened wide for your enemies; fire will devour your bars.

Draw in water because of the blockade; build up your fortresses. Go into the clay and tread; work it to make brick.

There, fire will devour you. You will perish by the sword; it will devour you like the beetle. Gather together like the beetle. Multiply like the locust.

You have made more negotiations than there are stars in the sky. The beetle has spread out and flown away.

Your guardians are like locusts, and your little ones are like locusts among locusts, which alight on hedges on a cold day. The sun rose up, and they flew away, and there was no way to know the place where they had been.(e)

Your shepherds have become drowsy, king Assur. Your princes will be buried. Your people have remained hidden in the mountains, and there is no one to gather them.

Your destruction is not hidden; your wound is grievous. All who have heard of your fame have clenched their hands over you, because over whom has your wickedness not trampled continually?(g)

Das Weh von Ninive

Wehe der Stadt der Blutschuld, ganz angefüllt von Trug und Gewalttat, nicht hört in dir das Rauben auf.

Horch! Peitschenknall und Rädergerassel, der Rosse Wiehern, der Wagen Rollen, anstürmende Reiter,

blinkende Schwerter, Blitzen der Speere, viele Erschlagene und schwere Niederlagen; zahllos sind die Leichen, so dass sie über ihre Leiber dahinstürzen.

Wegen der vielen Buhlereien der schönen, holden, zauberkundigen Buhlerin, welche die Völker durch ihre Buhlkünste verhandelte, die Geschlechter durch ihre Zauberkünste;

siehe, ich will an dich, spricht der Herr der Heerscharen; ich will deine Blöße vor deinem Angesichte aufdecken und den Völkern deine Nacktheit zeigen und den Königreichen deine Schande.

Ich will Greuel auf dich werfen, dir Schmach antun und dich zum Schauspiele machen.

Und es wird geschehen, jeder, der dich erblickt, wird zurückbeben vor dir und sprechen: Zerstört ist Ninive! Wer wird über dich das Haupt schütteln? Wo soll ich einen Tröster für dich suchen?

Bist du etwa besser als Alexandria, die volkreiche, die an Strömen liegt, um die ringsum Wasser, deren Reichtum das Meer, deren Mauern Wasser?

Äthiopien und Ägypten waren ihre Stärke endlos hin, Afrika und Libyen waren deine Hilfe.

Doch auch sie ist in die Verbannung, in die Gefangenschaft weggeführt, ihre Kinder wurden zerschmettert an allen Straßenecken, über ihren Edlen warf man das Los und alle ihre Großen sind in Fesseln geschlagen.

So sollst auch du trunken und verachtet sein, sollst auch du Hilfe suchen vor dem Feinde.

Alle deine Burgen werden wie Feigenbäume sein mit Frühfrüchten; wenn sie geschüttelt werden, fallen diese dem, der essen will, in den Mund.

Siehe, dein Volk, Weiber sind sie in deiner Mitte, weit stehen die Tore deines Landes deinen Feinden offen, Feuer verzehrt deine Riegel.

Schöpfe dir Wasser für die Belagerung, baue dir Bollwerke, tritt Lehm und stampfe ihn tretend und handhabe den Ziegelstein!

Dort wird dich das Feuer fressen, das Schwert dich vertilgen, es wird dich verzehren wie die Heuschrecken; magst du auch in Haufen sein wie Käfer, zahlreich wie Heuschrecken.

Deiner Handelschaften waren mehr als die Sterne des Himmels, doch die Käfer entwickeln sich und fliegen davon.

Deine Hüter gleichen Heuschrecken und deine Geringen den Heuschreckenschwärmen, welche sich zur Zeit des Trostes auf die Hecken niederlassen; geht die Sonne auf, so fliegen sie davon und man erkennt den Ort nicht mehr, wo sie gewesen sind.

Es schlummern deine Hirten, König von Assur! Begraben sind deine Fürsten, dein Volk hält sich in den Bergen versteckt und niemand sammelt es.

Nicht ist deine Wunde zugedeckt, überaus schlimm dein Schaden; alle, die von dir vernehmen, schlagen die Hände über dich zusammen, den über wen erging deine Bosheit nicht allezeit?
