- Chapter 5 -

Listen to my words

1
Unto the end.(a) For her who pursues the inheritance. A Psalm of David.(b)
2
O Lord, listen closely to my words. Understand my outcry.
3
Attend to the voice of my prayer, my King and my God.
4
For to you, I will pray. In the morning, Lord, you will hear my voice.
5
In the morning, I will stand before you, and I will see. For you are not a God who wills iniquity.
6
And the malicious will not dwell close to you, nor will the unjust endure before your eyes.
7
You hate all who work iniquity. You will destroy all who speak a lie. The bloody and deceitful man, the Lord will abominate.
8
But I am in the multitude of your mercy. I will enter your house. I will show adoration toward your holy temple, in your fear.(c)
9
Lord, lead me in your justice. Because of my enemies, direct my way in your sight.
10
For there is no truth in their mouth: their heart is vain.
11
Their throat is an open sepulcher. They have acted deceitfully with their tongues. Judge them, O God. Let them fall by their own intentions: according to the multitude of their impiety, expel them. For they have provoked you, O Lord.
12
But let all those who hope in you rejoice. They will exult in eternity, and you will dwell in them. And all those who love your name will glory in you.
13
For you will bless the just. You have crowned us, O Lord, as if with a shield of your good will.

(a)4:1 Unto the end:Or, as St. Jerome renders it, victori, to him that overcomes: which some understand of the chief musician; to whom they suppose the psalms, which bear that title, were given to be sung: we rather understand the psalms thus inscribed to refer to Christ, who is the end of the law, and the great conqueror of death and hell, and to the New Testament.(Challoner)
(b)5:1 For her that obtains the inheritance:That is, for the church of Christ.(Challoner)
(c)5:8 The humanity of Christ is a Temple united to His Divinity.(Conte)

Listen to my words

1
Give ear to my words, LORD. Consider my meditation.
2
Listen to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for I pray to you.
3
LORD, in the morning you will hear my voice. In the morning I will lay my requests before you, and will watch expectantly.
4
For you are not a God who has pleasure in wickedness. Evil can’t live with you.
5
The arrogant will not stand in your sight. You hate all workers of iniquity.
6
You will destroy those who speak lies. The LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.
7
But as for me, in the abundance of your loving kindness I will come into your house. I will bow toward your holy temple in reverence of you.
8
Lead me, LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies. Make your way straight before my face.
9
For there is no faithfulness in their mouth. Their heart is destruction. Their throat is an open tomb. They flatter with their tongue.
10
Hold them guilty, God. Let them fall by their own counsels. Thrust them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against you.
11
But let all those who take refuge in you rejoice. Let them always shout for joy, because you defend them. Let them also who love your name be joyful in you.
12
For you will bless the righteous. LORD, you will surround him with favor as with a shield.
