- Kapitel 18 -

And when he had made an ende of speaking vnto Saul, the soule of Ionathan was knit with the soule of Dauid, and Ionathan loued him, as his owne soule.

And Saul tooke him that day, and woulde not let him returne to his fathers house.

Then Ionathan and Dauid made a couenant: for he loued him as his owne soule.

And Ionathan put off the robe that was vpon him, and gaue it Dauid, and his garments, euen to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle.

Saul Envies David

And Dauid went out whithersoeuer Saul sent him, and behaued himselfe wisely: so that Saul set him ouer the men of warre, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Sauls seruants.

When they came againe, and Dauid returned from the slaughter of the Philistim, the women came out of all cities of Israel singing and dauncing to meete king Saul, with timbrels, with instruments of ioy, and with rebeckes.

And the women sang by course in their play, and sayd, Saul hath slayne his thousand, and Dauid his ten thousand.

Therefore Saul was exceeding wroth, and the saying displeased him, and he sayde, They haue ascribed vnto Dauid ten thousand, and to me they haue ascribed but a thousand, and what can he haue more saue the kingdome?

Wherefore Saul had an eye on Dauid from that day forward.

And on the morowe, the euill spirite of God came vpon Saul, and he prophecied in the middes of the house: and Dauid played with his hand like as at other times, and there was a speare in Sauls hand.

And Saul tooke the speare, and sayd, I will smite Dauid through to the wall. But Dauid auoyded twise out of his presence.

And Saul was afrayd of Dauid, because the Lord was with him, and was departed from Saul.

Therefore Saul put him from him, and made him a captaine ouer a thousand, and he went out and in before the people.

And Dauid behaued himselfe wisely in all his wayes: for the Lord was with him.

Wherefore when Saul saw that he was very wise, he was afrayde of him.

For all Israel and Iudah loued Dauid, because he went out and in before them.

David Marries Michal

Then Saul sayd to Dauid, Beholde mine eldest daughter Merab, her I will giue thee to wife: onely be a valiant sonne vnto me, and fight the Lordes battels: for Saul thought, Mine hand shall not be vpon him, but the hand of the Philistims shalbe vpon him.

And Dauid answered Saul, What am I? and what is my life, or the family of my father in Israel, that I should be sonne in law to the King?

Howbeit when Merab Sauls daughter should haue bene giuen to Dauid, she was giuen vnto Adriel a Meholathite to wife.

Then Michal Sauls daughter loued Dauid: and they shewed Saul, and the thing pleased him.

Therefore Saul said, I wil giue him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistims may bee against him. Wherefore Saul sayde to Dauid, Thou shalt this day be my sonne in law in the one of the twayne.

And Saul commanded his seruants, Speake with Dauid secretly, and say, Behold, ye King hath a fauour to thee, and all his seruants loue thee: be now therefore the Kings sonne in law.

And Sauls seruantes spake these wordes in the eares of Dauid. And Dauid sayd, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a Kings sonne in lawe, seeing that I am a poore man and of small reputation?

And then Sauls seruats brought him word againe, saying, Such wordes spake Dauid.

And Saul sayd, This wise shall ye say to Dauid, The King desireth no dowrie, but an hundred foreskinnes of the Philistims, to bee auenged of the Kings enemies: for Saul thought to make Dauid fall into the handes of the Philistims.

And when his seruantes tolde Dauid these wordes, it pleased Dauid well, to be the Kings sonne in law: and the dayes were not expired.

Afterwarde Dauid arose with his men, and went and slewe of the Philistims two hundreth men: and Dauid brought their foreskinnes, and they gaue them wholly to the King that hee might be the Kings sonne in lawe: therefore Saul gaue him Michal his daughter to wife.

Then Saul sawe, and vnderstoode that the Lord was with Dauid, and that Michal the daughter of Saul loued him.

Then Saul was more and more afrayde of Dauid, and Saul became alway Dauids enemie.

And when the Princes of the Philistims went forth, at their going forth Dauid behaued himselfe more wisely then all the seruants of Saul, so that his name was much set by.

Saul widersetzt sich David

Und es geschah, als er die Unterredung mit Saul beendet hatte, verband sich die Seele Jonathas innig mit der Seele Davids, und Jonathas gewann ihn lieb wie sein Leben.

Und Saul nahm ihn an jenem Tage zu sich und gestattete ihm nicht mehr, in das Haus seines Vaters zurückzukehren.

David aber und Jonathas schlossen einen Bund, denn er liebte ihn wie sein Leben.

Und Jonathas zog sein Obergewand aus, mit welchem er bekleidet war, und gab es David, dazu seine übrigen Kleider, sogar sein Schwert, seinen Bogen und seinen Gürtel.

David nun zog zu allem aus, wozu ihn Saul sandte, und hielt sich klug, so dass Saul ihn über die Kriegsleute setzte; und er war bei dem ganzen Volke beliebt, besonders in den Augen der Diener Sauls.

Als nun David von der Tötung des Philisters zurückkehrte, zogen die Frauen aus allen Städten Israels mit Gesang und Reigen dem Könige Saul entgegen, mit Jubelpauken und Zimbeln.

Und die Frauen spielten und sangen, diese Worte: Saul hat tausend erschlagen und David zehntausend!

Da geriet Saul in heftigen Zorn und diese Rede missfiel in seinen Augen und er sprach: David haben sie zehntausend und mir tausend gegeben; was ist ihm noch übrig als allein das Königtum?

Darum sah Saul den David von jenem Tage an und hinfort nicht mit rechten Augen an.

Am folgenden Tage aber befiel der böse Geist von Gott Saul, und er tobte in seinem Hause; David aber spielte auf der Harfe, wie an den andern Tagen. Und Saul hielt den Speer in seiner Hand

und warf ihn in der Absicht, David damit an die Wand zu spießen; aber David wich zum zweiten Male von seinem Angesichte.

Und Saul fürchtete sich vor David, denn der Herr war mit ihm, während er von ihm selbst gewichen war.

Deshalb entfernte ihn Saul von sich und machte ihn zum Obersten über tausend Mann; und er zog vor den Augen des Volkes aus und ein.

Auch auf allen seinen Wegen handelte David klug und der Herr war mit ihm.

Als Saul sah, dass er sehr klug war, fing er an ihn zu scheuen.

Ganz Israel und Juda aber liebte David, denn er zog vor ihnen her aus und ein.

Und Saul sprach zu David: Siehe, ich will dir meine älteste Tochter Merob zur Frau geben, nur sei tapfer und kämpfe die Kämpfe des Herrn! Saul aber dachte bei sich und sprach: Meine Hand soll sich nicht gegen ihn erheben, sondern die Hand der Philister möge über ihn kommen!

David sprach zu Saul: Wer bin ich und was ist mein Leben oder das Geschlecht meines Vaters in Israel, dass ich der Schwiegersohn des Königs werden sollte?

Als nun die Zeit kam, dass Merob, die Tochter Sauls, David gegeben werden sollte, ward sie dem Molathiter Hadriel zum Weibe gegeben.

Michol aber, die andere Tochter Sauls, liebte den David; dies ward Saul berichtet und es gefiel ihm wohl.

Und Saul sprach: Ich will sie ihm geben, dass sie ihm zum Fallstrick werde und die Hand der Philister über ihn komme. Darum sprach Saul zu David: Um zwei Dinge kannst du heut mein Schwiegersohn werden.

Und Saul gebot seinen Dienern: redet mit David insgeheim und saget: Siehe, du gefällst dem Könige und alle seine Diener lieben dich; werde also der Schwiegersohn des Königs.

Da redeten die Diener Sauls alle diese Worte vor den Ohren Davids und David sprach: Scheint euch das etwas Geringes, des Königs Schwiegersohn zu sein? Ich aber bin ein armer und geringer Mann.

Und die Diener Sauls berichteten es ihm und sprachen: Solche Worte hat David geredet.

Saul aber sprach: Saget so zu David: Der König hat keine andere Brautgabe nötig als einzig hundert Vorhäute von Philistern, damit Rache an den Feinden des Königs genommen werde. Saul aber dachte, David in die Gewalt der Philister zu liefern.

Als nun seine Diener David die Worte berichteten, welche Saul gesprochen hatte, gefiel der Vorschlag David, dass er der Schwiegersohn des Königs werden sollte.

So machte sich denn David nach etlichen Tagen auf und zog mit den Leuten, die ihm untergeben waren, fort und erschlug zweihundert Philister und brachte ihre Vorhäute und zählte sie dem Könige vor, um sein Schwiegersohn zu werden. Da gab ihm Saul seine Tochter Michol zur Frau.

Und Saul sah und erkannte, dass der Herr mit David war. Michol aber, die Tochter Sauls, liebte ihn.

Da begann Saul, sich noch mehr vor David zu fürchten und Saul ward der Feind Davids auf immer.

Da nun die Fürsten der Philister auszogen, verhielt sich David vom Anfange ihres Auszuges an klüger als alle Diener Sauls, so dass sein Name hoch gefeiert ward.
