- Kapitel 5 -

Nehemiah deals with oppression

And there is a great cry of the people and their wives, concerning their brothers the Jews,

indeed, there are [those] who are saying, “Our sons, and our daughters, we—are many, and we receive grain, and eat, and live.”

And there are [those] who are saying, “Our fields, and our vineyards, and our houses, we are pledging, and we receive grain for the famine.”

And there are [those] who are saying, “We have borrowed money for the tribute of the king, [on] our fields, and our vineyards;

and now, as the flesh of our brothers [is] our flesh, as their sons [are] our sons, and behold, we are subduing our sons and our daughters for servants, and there are [those] of our daughters subdued, and our hand has no might, and our fields and our vineyards [are] to others.”

And it is very displeasing to me when I have heard their cry and these words,

and my heart reigns over me, and I strive with the nobles, and with the prefects, and say to them, “You are exacting usury on one another”; and I set against them a great assembly,

and say to them, “We have acquired our brothers the Jews, those sold to the nations, according to the ability that [is] in us, and you also sell your brothers, and they have been sold to us!” And they are silent, and have not found a word.

And I say, “The thing that you are doing [is] not good; do you not walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

And also, I, my brothers, and my servants, are exacting silver and grain on them; please let us leave off this usury.

Please give back to them, as today, their fields, their vineyards, their olive-yards, and their houses, and the hundredth [part] of the money, and of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil, that you are exacting of them.”

And they say, “We give back, and we seek nothing from them; so we do as you are saying.” And I call the priests, and cause them to swear to do according to this thing;

also, I have shaken my lap, and I say, “Thus God shakes out every man from his house and from his labor who does not perform this thing; indeed, thus is he shaken out and empty”; and all the assembly says, “Amen,” and praises YHWH; and the people do according to this thing.

The generosity of Nehemiah

Also, from the day that he appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king—twelve years—I, and my brothers, have not eaten the bread of the governor:

the former governors who [are] before me have made themselves heavy on the people, and take of them in bread and wine, besides forty shekels in silver; also, their servants have ruled over the people—and I have not done so, because of the fear of God.

And also, in the work of this wall I have done mightily, even a field we have not bought, and all my servants are gathered there for the work;

and of the Jews, and of the prefects, one hundred and fifty men, and those coming to us of the nations that [are] around us, [are] at my table;

and that which has been prepared for one day [is] one ox, six fat sheep, also birds have been prepared for me, and once in ten days of all wines abundantly, and with this, the bread of the governor I have not sought, for heavy is the service on this people.

Remember for me, O my God, for good, all that I have done for this people.

Nehemia geht mit Unterdrückung um

Es erhob sich aber ein großes Geschrei seitens des Volkes und ihrer Frauen gegen ihre Brüder, die Juden.

Einige sagten: Unsere Söhne und unsere Töchter sind überaus zahlreich; wir wollen Getreide für ihren Wert nehmen, dass wir zu essen haben und am Leben bleiben.

Andere sagten: Wir wollen unsere Äcker und Weinberge und unsere Häuser verpfänden, um Getreide in der Hungersnot zu bekommen.

Wieder andere sprachen: Wir wollen Geld entlehnen zur Steuer für den König und unsere Äcker und Weinberge hingeben.

Und nun, obgleich unser Fleisch wie unserer Brüder Fleisch ist und unsere Söhne wie ihre Söhne, sehet, so unterwerfen wir doch unsere Söhne und unsere Töchter der Dienstbarkeit, und es sind schon einige von unsern Töchtern leibeigene Mägde, ohne dass wir die Mittel haben, sie loszukaufen, und unsere Äcker und unsere Weinberge besitzen andere.

Da zürnte ich sehr, als ich ihr Geschrei und diese Reden hörte,

und ich überlegte alles in meinem Herzen und schalt die Vornehmen und die Vorsteher und sprach zu ihnen: Ihr treibt Wucher, ein Bruder an dem andern? Und ich berief wider sie eine große Versammlung

und sprach zu ihnen: Wir haben nach unserm Vermögen, wie ihr wisst, unsere Brüder, die Juden, losgekauft, die den Völkern verkauft waren; und ihr wollt nun eure Brüder verkaufen, dass wir sie loskaufen sollen? Da schwiegen sie und wussten nichts zu antworten.

Und ich sprach zu ihnen: Was ihr da tut, ist nicht gut. Warum wandelt ihr nicht in der Furcht unsers Gottes, damit uns nichts von den Völkern, unsern Feinden, vorgeworfen werde?

Auch ich und meine Brüder und meine Knechte haben sehr vielen Geld und Getreide geliehen, lasset uns insgemein dies nicht zurückfordern, sondern die Schuld erlassen, die wir ausstehen haben.

Gebet ihnen noch heute ihre Äcker, ihre Weinberge, ihre Ölgärten und ihre Häuser zurück; ja auch den Hundertsten vom Geld, Getreide, Wein und Öl, den ihr von ihnen zu fordern pflegt, gebet an ihrer Statt.

Da sprachen sie: Wir wollen es zurückgeben und von ihnen nichts fordern und wollen tun, wie du sagst. Und ich berief die Priester und nahm ihnen einen Eid ab, dass sie dem gemäß tun würden, was ich ihnen gesagt hatte.

Überdies schüttelte ich mein Kleid aus und sprach: So schüttle Gott einen jeden von seinem Hause und seinem Besitze aus, der dies Wort nicht erfüllt; so werde er ausgeschüttelt und werde leer! Da sprach die ganze Gemeinde: Amen! Und sie lobten Gott. Das Volk tat also, wie gesagt war.

Die Großzügigkeit des Nehemia

Von dem Tage an aber, da der König mir befohlen hatte, Statthalter im Lande Juda zu sein, vom zwanzigsten Jahre bis zum zweiunddreißigsten Jahre des Königs Artaxerxes, zwölf Jahre hindurch, verzehrte ich mit meinen Brüdern die Jahreseinkünfte nicht, welche dem Statthalter gebührten;

denn die früheren Statthalter, die vor mir da waren, hatten das Volk belastet und von ihm, zu Brot und Wein, noch täglich vierzig Sekel Silber genommen, dazu hatten ihre Diener das Volk bedrückt. Ich aber tat dies nicht aus Furcht vor Gott,

vielmehr baute ich selbst an der Mauer mit und kaufte keinen Acker, und alle meine Knechte waren insgesamt bei der Arbeit.

Und die Juden, sowohl die Vorsteher, hundertfünfzig an Zahl, als auch die, welche von den Völkern um uns her zu uns kamen, aßen an meinem Tische.

Und man bereitete mir Tag für Tag einen Stier und sechs auserlesene Widder, außer dem Geflügel, und je innerhalb zehn Tagen gab ich verschiedenen Wein und vieles andere; und bei alledem forderte ich das Einkommen meiner Statthalterwürde nicht, denn das Volk war sehr verarmt.

Mein Gott! gedenke alles dessen, was ich diesem Volke getan, für mich zum Guten!
