- Kapitel 8 -

The most important part of everything that I have written is that we have a high priest who has sat down to rule in the place of greatest honor in heaven, beside God himself.

He serves in the sanctuary, that is, in the true place of worship in heaven. That is the true sacred tent, for the Lord set it up, not Moses.

God appoints every high priest to offer gifts and sacrifices for the people’s sins. So since Messiah became a high priest, he also had to offer something.

Since there are already priests who offer gifts as God’s law requires, if Messiah were now living on the earth, he would not be a high priest at all.

The priests in Jerusalem perform rituals that are only a copy of what Messiah does in heaven. This is because when Moses was about to set up the sacred tent, God told him, “Be sure that you make everything according to what I showed you on Mount Sinai!”

The New Covenant

(Jeremiah 31:26–40)

But now Messiah serves in a much better way than the Jewish priests do. In the same way, the new covenant that he established between God and people is better than the old one. When he established the new covenant, he promised us better things than the laws that God gave Moses.

God needed to make this new covenant, because the first covenant had not done everything well.

Because God declared that the Israelites were guilty of not obeying the first covenant, he wanted a new covenant. This is what a prophet wrote about that: “The Lord says, ’Listen! There will soon be a time when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and the people of Judah.

That covenant will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I led them out of Egypt like a father leads his young child. They did not continue to obey my covenant, so I let them alone,’ says the Lord.

’This is the covenant that I will make with the Israelites, after the first covenant has ended,’ says the Lord: ’I will enable them to understand my laws, and I will enable them to obey them sincerely from their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

No one will need to teach a fellow citizen or tell his fellow kinsmen, ‘You acknowledge that the Lord is God,’ because all my people will acknowledge me. Everyone among my people, from the least important to the most important, will know me.
12
I will mercifully forgive them for the wicked things they have done. I will no longer consider that they are guilty for their sins.”

Since God said that he was making a new covenant, we know that he considered that the first covenant was no longer in use, and that it would soon disappear.

Der neue priesterliche Dienst

Der Hauptpunkt aber von dem Gesagten ist: Wir haben einen solchen Hohenpriester, der sich zur Rechten des Thrones der Majestät im Himmel gesetzt hat,

als Diener des Heiligtums und des wahrhaften Zeltes, welches der Herr errichtet hat, und nicht ein Mensch.

Denn jeder Hohepriester wird dazu bestellt, Gaben und Opfer darzubringen, deshalb ist es notwendig, dass auch dieser etwas hat, was er darbringe.

Wäre er nun auf Erden, so würde er nicht einmal Priester sein; da solche da sind, welche dem Gesetze gemäß die Gaben darbringen,

sie, welche einem Abbilde und Schattenrisse des Himmlischen dienen; wie denn Moses, als er das Zelt verfertigen sollte, die Weisung empfing: Siehe zu (sprach er), dass du alles nach dem Vorbilde machest, welches dir auf dem Berge gezeigt worden ist.

Nun aber ist ihm ein um so viel vorzüglicherer Priesterdienst zu Teil geworden, je vorzüglicher der Bund ist, dessen Mittler er ist, weil dieser auf vorzüglichere Verheißungen gegründet ist.

Ein neuer Bund

Denn wenn jener erste Bund untadelig gewesen wäre, so würde ja für einen zweiten kein Platz gesucht.

Denn tadelnd spricht er zu ihnen: Sehet, es werden Tage kommen, spricht der Herr, da ich mit dem Hause Israel und mit dem Hause Juda einen neuen Bund schließe,

nicht nach Art des Bundes, welchen ich mit ihren Vätern gemacht habe am Tage, da ich ihre Hand ergriff, um sie aus dem Lande Ägypten zu führen; denn sie verblieben nicht in meinem Bunde, so habe auch ich sie aufgegeben, spricht der Herr.

Dies nämlich ist der Bund, welchen ich mit dem Hause Israel nach jenen Tagen schließen werde, spricht der Herr: Ich will meine Gesetze in ihren Sinn legen, und werde sie in ihr Herz schreiben, und ich werde ihr Gott sein, und sie werden mein Volk sein.

Dann wird keiner seinen Nächsten, keiner seinen Bruder lehren, indem er sagt: Erkenne den Herrn! Denn sie alle werden mich kennen, vom Kleinsten bis zum Größten unter ihnen;
12
weil ich ihren Missetaten gnädig sein werde, und ihrer Sünden hinfür nicht mehr gedenken werde.
13
Indem er aber sagt: einen neuen Bund, hat er den ersten für veraltet erklärt; was aber veraltet ist und hinfällig wird, ist dem Verschwinden nahe.
