- Kapitel 23 -

A long time later, by the time Yahweh had allowed the Israelites to live in peace, without fearing any longer any enemies, Joshua had become very old.

Joshua called for all of Israel’s elders and leaders, together with their judges and officers, to come and listen to him. When they arrived, he began to speak to them: “I am now very old.

We have all seen what Yahweh our God has done to all the nations in this land. Yahweh our God has fought for us.

I have given to you the nations that remain. Their lands will also be your permanent possession for the tribes of Israel, just as are the lands of the people groups that our people destroyed when I was leading them, all those other nations that the Israelites destroyed from the Jordan to the Mediterranean Sea when I was the leader.

Yahweh your God will force those people out from their lands. He will capture their lands from them, in order that you might settle down in those lands. This is what he has promised to do for you.

Pay careful attention so that you obey all that are written in the book of laws that Moses wrote down. Do not disobey them or change any of them.

If you obey the law of Moses, you will not mix our people with those people groups. Do not even mention the names of their gods, and do not use the names of their gods when you make promises or take oaths. Do not worship those gods or bow down to them.

Love Yahweh and trust in him, as you have been doing. Do not stop worshiping him.

Yahweh has forced many great and powerful nations to get out of your way as you advanced. No one has been able to stop you.

Any single soldier among you will be able to cause a thousand men of war in the army of your enemy, to run away, because Yahweh your God fights for you. That is what he promised to do.

So do all you can to love Yahweh your God.

However, if you stop doing what Yahweh desires; if you associate with those people groups who survived the wars with our people, or if you marry them and become their friends, and if they become friends with you,

then you can be sure that Yahweh our God will not help you force them out of your land. They will become like traps that will catch you. They will be like whips that strike your backs, and like thorns that will stick you in the eye. Your people group will become weaker and weaker until you die out in this land, this very good land that Yahweh our God has given to us.

It is almost time for me to die, like everyone else does. You know deep within you, that every single thing that Yahweh promised to do for you, he has done it.

He has given to you all the good things he promised. In the same way, the other things that he promised, things that are not good, will also happen if you do what is evil. In that case he will take your lives and your land away from you.

If you do not obey the covenant between Yahweh and you, and if you leave him and go and worship other gods and bow down to them, Yahweh will become very angry with you, just as a fire starts from a spark. Very quickly he will take away your lives, and he will take away this good land from you, the same land he has now given to you.”

Josuas Abschiedsrede

Als nun eine lange Zeit verflossen war, seitdem der Herr Israel Frieden gegeben und alle Völker ringsum unterworfen hatte, als Josue schon sehr alt und in das äußerste Greisenalter getreten war,

berief Josue ganz Israel, die Ältesten, die Fürsten, die Anführer, und die Vorsteher, und sprach zu ihnen: Ich bin alt und hochbetagt;

und ihr seht alles, was der Herr, euer Gott, allen Völkern, die uns umgeben, getan, und wie er selbst für euch gekämpft hat.

Da er euch nun das ganze Land durch das Los verteilt hat, von der Ostseite des Jordans bis zum großen Meere, aber noch viele Völker übrig sind,

so wird der Herr, euer Gott, diese vertreiben und vor euch vertilgen, und ihr werdet das Land in Besitz nehmen, wie er euch verheißen hat.

Nur seid stark und wachsam, und beobachtet alles, was im Buche des Gesetzes Moses geschrieben ist; und weichet nicht davon ab, weder zur Rechten noch zur Linken;

damit ihr, wenn ihr zu den Völkern gekommen seid, die noch unter euch bleiben werden, nicht bei dem Namen ihrer Götter schwöret, noch denselben dienet, oder sie anbetet,

sondern dem Herrn, eurem Gott, treu bleibet, wie ihr es bis auf den heutigen Tag getan habt.

Dann wird auch Gott, der Herr, große und starke Völker vor euch vertilgen, und niemand wird vermögen, euch Stand zu halten.

Einer von euch wird tausend Feinde vor sich herjagen, denn der Herr, euer Gott, wird selbst für euch kämpfen, wie er verheißen hat.

Nur habet auf das sorgfältigste Acht, dass ihr den Herrn, euren Gott, liebet.

Wenn ihr aber den Irrtümern dieser Völker, die unter euch wohnen, euch anschließen, und Heiraten mit ihnen eingehen, und Freundschaft mit ihnen schließen wollt,

so wisset schon jetzt, dass der Herr, euer Gott, sie alsdann vor euch nicht vertilgen wird, sondern dass sie euch zu Grube und zum Fallstrick, zum Anstoß an eurer Seite, und zum Pfahl in euren Augen werden, bis er euch aus diesem guten Lande, das er euch gegeben hat, vertreibt und vertilgt.

sehet, ich gehe heute den Weg allen Irdischen; so verstehet denn vom Grund der Seele, dass von allen Verheißungen, welche der Herr versprochen euch zu erfüllen, auch nicht eine unerfüllt geblieben ist.

Wie er also seine Verheißung durch die Tat erfüllt hat, und wie alles glücklich gegangen ist, so wird er auch alles Böse, das er angedroht hat, über euch kommen lassen, bis er euch aus diesem guten Lande, das er euch gegeben hat, vertreibt und wegtilgt,

weil ihr den Bund des Herrn, eures Gottes, den er mit euch geschlossen, übertreten, und fremden Göttern gedient, und sie angebetet habt; schnell und plötzlich wird der Zorn des Herrn wider euch entbrennen, und ihr werdet aus diesem guten Lande, welches er euch gegeben hat, vertrieben werden.
