- Kapitel 13 -

(Acts 15:36–41; Acts 18:23–28)

Now there were, in the Church at Antioch, prophets and teachers, among whom were Barnabas, and Simon, who was called the Black, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manahen, who was the foster brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

Now as they were ministering for the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said to them: “Separate Saul and Barnabas for me, for the work for which I have selected them.”

Then, fasting and praying and imposing their hands upon them, they sent them away.

On Cyprus

And having been sent by the Holy Spirit, they went to Seleucia. And from there they sailed to Cyprus.

And when they had arrived at Salamis, they were preaching the Word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they also had John in the ministry.

And when they had traveled throughout the entire island, even to Paphos, they found a certain man, a magician, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-Jesu.

And he was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man. This man, summoning Barnabas and Saul, wanted to hear the Word of God.

But Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) stood against them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the Faith.

Then Saul, who is also called Paul, having been filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him,

and he said: “So full of every deceit and of all falsehoods, son of the devil, enemy of all justice, you never cease to subvert the righteous ways of the Lord!

And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you. And you will be blinded, not seeing the sun for a length of time.” And immediately a fog and a darkness fell over him. And wandering around, he was seeking someone who might lead him by the hand.

Then the proconsul, when he had seen what was done, believed, being in wonder over the doctrine of the Lord.

In Pisidian Antioch

And when Paul and those who were with him had sailed from Paphos, they arrived at Perga in Pamphylia. Then John departed from them and returned to Jerusalem.

Yet truly, they, traveling on from Perga, arrived at Antioch in Pisidia. And upon entering the synagogue on the Sabbath day, they sat down.

Then, after the reading from the Law and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent to them, saying: “Noble brothers, if there is in you any word of exhortation to the people, speak.”

Then Paul, rising up and motioning for silence with his hand, said: “Men of Israel and you who fear God, listen closely.

The God of the people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people, when they were settlers in the land of Egypt. And with an exalted arm, he led them away from there.

And throughout a time of forty years, he endured their behavior in the desert.

And by destroying seven nations in the land of Canaan, he divided their land among them by lot,

after about four hundred and fifty years. And after these things, he gave them judges, even until the prophet Samuel.

And later on, they petitioned for a king. And God gave them Saul, the son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

And having removed him, he raised up for them king David. And offering testimony about him, he said, ‘I have found David, the son of Jesse, to be a man according to my own heart, who will accomplish all that I will.’

From his offspring, according to the Promise, God has brought Jesus the Savior to Israel.

John was preaching, before the face of his advent, a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

Then, when John completed his course, he was saying: ‘I am not the one you consider me to be. For behold, one arrives after me, the shoes of whose feet I am not worthy to loosen.’

Noble brothers, sons of the stock of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, it is to you the Word of this salvation has been sent.(a)

For those who were living in Jerusalem, and its rulers, heeding neither him, nor the voices of the Prophets that are read on every Sabbath, fulfilled these by judging him.

And although they found no case for death against him, they petitioned Pilate, so that they might put him to death.

And when they had fulfilled everything that had been written about him, taking him down from the tree, they placed him in a tomb.

Yet truly, God raised him up from the dead on the third day.

And he was seen for many days by those who went up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who even now are his witnesses to the people.

And we are announcing to you that the Promise, which was made to our fathers,

has been fulfilled by God for our children by raising up Jesus, just as it has been written in the second Psalm also: ‘You are my Son. This day I have begotten you.’

Now, since he raised him from the dead, so as to no longer return to corruption, he has said this: ‘I will give to you the holy things of David, the faithful one.’(b)

And also then, in another place, he says: ‘You will not allow your Holy One to see corruption.’

For David, when he had ministered to his generation in accordance with the will of God, fell asleep, and he was placed next to his fathers, and he saw corruption.

Yet truly, he whom God has raised from the dead has not seen corruption.

Therefore, let it be known to you, noble brothers, that through him is announced to you remission from sins and from everything by which you were not able to be justified in the law of Moses.

In him, all who believe are justified.

Therefore, be careful, lest what was said by the Prophets may overwhelm you:

‘You despisers! Look, and wonder, and be scattered! For I am working a deed in your days, a deed which you would not believe, even if someone were to explain it to you.’ ”

A Light for the Gentiles

(Isaiah 49:1–6)

Then, as they were departing, they asked them if, on the following Sabbath, they might speak these words to them.

And when the synagogue had been dismissed, many among the Jews and the new worshipers were following Paul and Barnabas. And they, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

Yet truly, on the following Sabbath, nearly the entire city came together to hear the Word of God.

Then the Jews, seeing the crowds, were filled with envy, and they, blaspheming, contradicted the things that were being said by Paul.

Then Paul and Barnabas said firmly: “It was necessary to speak the Word of God first to you. But because you reject it, and so judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.

For so has the Lord instructed us: ‘I have set you as a light to the Gentiles, so that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ”

Then the Gentiles, upon hearing this, were gladdened, and they were glorifying the Word of the Lord. And as many as believed were preordained to eternal life.

Now the word of the Lord was disseminated throughout the entire region.

But the Jews incited some devout and honest women, and the leaders of the city. And they stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas. And they drove them away from their parts.

But they, shaking the dust from their feet against them, went on to Iconium.

The disciples were likewise filled with gladness and with the Holy Spirit.

Es waren aber in der Kirche zu Antiochia Propheten und Lehrer; darunter Barnabas, Simon, genannt Niger, Lucius von Cyrene, Manahen, der Milchbruder des Herodes, des Vierfürsten, und Saulus.

Als diese nun den heiligen Dienst des Herrn verrichteten und fasteten, sprach der Heilige Geist zu ihnen: Sondert mir den Saulus und Barnabas zu dem Werke aus, zu dem ich sie mir berufen habe,

Da fasteten und beteten sie, und legten ihnen die Hände auf, und entließen sie.

Verkündigung auf Zypern

Diese, ausgesandt vom Heiligen Geiste, gingen nach Seleucia; und von da fuhren sie zu Schiff nach Cypern.

Und als sie nach Salamis gekommen waren, predigten sie das Wort Gottes in den Synagogen der Juden; sie hatten aber auch den Johannes zum Gehilfen.

Da sie die ganze Insel bis Paphus durchzogen hatten, fanden sie einen Zauberer und falschen Propheten, einen Juden, mit Namen Barjesu.

Dieser war bei dem Statthalter Sergius Paulus, einem verständigen Manne. Sergius berief Barnabas und Saulus zu sich, und begehrte das Wort Gottes zu hören.

Doch Elymas, der Zauberer (denn also wird sein Name verdolmetscht), widersetzte sich ihnen, und suchte den Statthalter vom Glauben abzuwenden.

Saulus aber, der auch Paulus heißt, heftete, erfüllt vom Heiligen Geiste, den Blick auf ihn,

und sprach: O du allen Trugs und aller Arglist voll, du Sohn des Teufels, du Feind aller Gerechtigkeit! hörst du nicht auf, die geraden Wege des Herrn zu verkehren?

Und jetzt, siehe, die Hand des Herrn kommt über dich, und du wirst blind sein, und die Sonne nicht sehen eine Zeitlang! Und sogleich fiel Dunkel und Finsternis auf ihn, und umhergehend suchte er nach jemanden, der ihm die Hand reichte.

Als der Statthalter sah, was geschehen war, glaubte er, staunend über die Lehre des Herrn.

In Antiochia in Pisidien

Paulus nun und seine Gefährten fuhren von Paphus ab, und kamen nach Perge in Pamphylien. Johannes aber trennte sich von ihnen, und kehrte nach Jerusalem zurück.

Sie zogen nun von Perge weiter, und kamen nach Antiochia in Pisidien; und gingen in die Synagoge am Sabbat und setzten sich.

Nach der Vorlesung aus dem Gesetze und den Propheten aber sandten die Vorsteher der Synagoge zu ihnen, und ließen ihnen sagen: Brüder! Falls ihr ein Wort der Erbauung für das Volk habet, so redet!

Da stand Paulus auf, gebot mit der Hand Stillschweigen, und sprach: Ihr Männer Israels, und ihr, die ihr Gott fürchtet, höret!

Der Gott des Volkes Israel hat sich unsere Väter erwählt, und hat das Volk erhöht, da sie Fremdlinge im Lande Ägypten waren, und mit erhobenem Arme hat er sie aus demselben herausgeführt.

Eine Zeit von vierzig Jahren hindurch ertrug er ihr Gebahren in der Wüste.

Und er vertilgte sieben Völker im Lande Chanaan, verteilte das Land derselben unter sie durch das Los,

ungefähr nach vierhundert und fünfzig Jahren. Und darnach gab er ihnen Richter bis auf den Propheten Samuel.

Und von da an verlangten sie einen König; und Gott gab ihnen den Saul, den Sohn des Kis, einen Mann aus dem Stamme Benjamin, vierzig Jahre lang.

Und nachdem er diesen verworfen hatte, erweckte er ihnen den David zum Könige, dem er Zeugnis gab, und sprach: Ich habe David, den Sohn des Jesse, als einen Mann nach meinem Herzen gefunden, der meinen Willen in allem tun wird.

Aus dessen Nachkommen hat Gott nach seiner Verheißung Israel einen Heiland gebracht, Jesus,

nachdem Johannes vor dessen Auftreten die Taufe der Buße allem Volke Israel gepredigt.

Als aber Johannes seinen Lauf vollendete, sprach er: Der, für den ihr mich haltet, bin ich nicht, sondern sehet, er kommt nach mir, dem ich nicht würdig bin, die Schuhe von den Füßen zu lösen.

Brüder, Kinder des Geschlechtes Abrahams, und wer unter euch Gott fürchtet, euch ist das Wort dieses Heiles gesandt!

Denn die Bewohner von Jerusalem und ihre Vorsteher haben diesen nicht erkannt, und die Worte der Propheten, welche jeden Sabbat vorgelesen werden, durch seine Verurteilung erfüllt.

Und obwohl sie an ihm keine Todesschuld fanden, verlangten sie doch von Pilatus, dass er getötet würde.

Als sie dann alles, was von ihm geschrieben war, erfüllt hatten, nahmen sie ihn vom Holze ab, und legten ihn in ein Grab.

Gott aber hat ihn am dritten Tage von den Toten auferweckt, und er ist viele Tage hindurch denen erschienen,

die zugleich mit ihm aus Galiläa nach Jerusalem hinaufgezogen waren, sie sind jetzt seine Zeugen vor dem Volke.

Und wir verkündigen euch die Verheißung, welche an unsere Väter ergangen ist;

dass Gott diese an unsern Kindern erfüllt hat, indem er Jesus auferweckt hat, wie es auch im zweiten Psalme geschrieben steht: Mein Sohn bist du, heute habe ich dich gezeuget.

Dass er ihn aber von den Toten erwecket hat, und er nicht mehr zur Verwesung zurückkehren wird, hat er also ausgesprochen: ich will euch das heilige Davids, das Getreue geben.

Darum sagt er auch an einer anderen Stelle: Du wirst nicht zulassen, dass dein Heiliger die Verwesung schaue.

Denn David ist, nachdem er zu seiner Zeit den Willen Gottes gedient hatte, entschlafen, und wurde bei seinen Vätern beigesetzt, und sah die Verwesung;

jener aber, den Gott von den Toten auferwecket hat, sah die Verwesung nicht.

So sei es euch deshalb kund, Brüder! dass durch diesen euch Vergebung der Sünden verkündigt wird; und von allen, wovon ihr nicht gerechtfertiget werden konntet im Gesetze Moses,

wird in diesem ein jeder, der glaubt, gerechtfertiget.

Sehet also zu, dass nicht über euch komme, was in den Propheten gesagt ist:

„Sehet, ihr Verächter! und verwundert euch und vergehet; denn ich tue ein Werk in euren Tagen, ein Werk, das ihr nicht glauben werdet, wenn jemand es euch erzählet.“

Segen und Konflikt in Antiochia

(Jesaja 49,1-6)

Als sie aber hinausgingen, baten sie, dass sie auch am künftigen Sabbate diese Worte zu ihnen reden möchten.

Und als die Versammlung entlassen war, folgten viele Juden und gottesfürchtige Judengenossen dem Paulus und Barnabas; und diese redeten zu ihnen, und ermahnten sie, in der Gnade Gottes zu verharren.

Am folgenden Sabbate aber versammelte sich fast die ganze Stadt, um das Wort Gottes zu hören.

Als nun die Juden das Volk sahen, wurden sie von Zorneifer erfüllt, und widersprachen dem, was Paulus sagte, und lästerten.

Da sprachen Paulus und Barnabas mit Freimut: Zu euch musste zuerst das Wort Gottes geredet werden; weil ihr es aber von euch stoßet, und euch des ewigen Lebens unwürdig erachtet, sehet, so wenden wir uns zu den Heiden.

Denn also hat es uns der Herr geboten: „Ich habe dich zum Lichte der Heiden gesetzt, damit du zum Heile seiest bis an die äußersten Grenzen der Erde."

Da dies die Heiden hörten, freuten sie sich und priesen das Wort des Herrn; und soviel ihrer zum ewigen Leben verordnet waren, wurden gläubig.

Und es ward das Wort des Herrn durch das ganze Land hin ausgebreitet.

Die Juden aber reizten die andächtigen und angesehenen Frauen und die Ersten der Stadt auf, und erregten eine Verfolgung gegen Paulus und Barnabas, und vertrieben sie aus ihrem Gebiete.

Diese jedoch schüttelten den Staub von ihren Füßen wider sie ab, und kamen nach Ikonium.

Die Jünger hingegen wurden mit Freude erfüllt und dem Heiligen Geiste.
